Calculating Your Grade/Mark Average or Percentage on a Non-4.0 Scale
Home >> Calculating Your Grade/Mark Average or Percentage on a Non-4.0 Scale

Know the grading scale for your school. Most international institutions use a 100-point, a 10-point, or a percentage system. Most U.S. institutions use the 4-point system. DO NOT CONVERT YOUR SCHOOL'S SYSTEM - use the scale your school uses on your transcripts.

100-Percent (100 Point) System
10 Point System
5-Year Program

100-PERCENT (100 Point) SYSTEM
Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average (GPA). In the 100-Percent (100-point) System, the Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average is determined by adding all earned marks for all semesters, dividing that number by the total number of points possible, and multiplying by 100.

Figure 1. Sample of a 100-Percent System Transcript

In Figure 1, the total number of points earned for the eight semesters is 4416 out of a possible 5250 marks. The Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average for this transcript is 4416/5250x100=84.11. The applicant would enter "84.11" in the Undergraduate GPA Grade Average field and -100 percent" in the Undergraduate GPA Scale field.

Junior/Senior (3rd/4th Year) Grade/Mark Average (GPA). To determine the Junior/Senior (3rd/4th Year) Grade/Mark Average on the 100-point scale, add all the points earned in the 3rd and 4th Years, divide by the total possible points in those years, and multiply by 100. In Figure 1, the Junior/Senior (3rd/4th Year) Grade/Mark Average would be 2246/2600x100=86.38. On the application, this student would enter "86.38" in the Junior/Senior GPA Grade Average field and -100 percent" in the Junior/Senior GPA Scale field.

10-POINT SYSTEM

Figure 2. 10-point System Transcript

Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average (GPA). In a 10-point System, the Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average (GPA) is based on all course work completed in earning your bachelorĂˆs degree, representing your overall average.

Generally, the Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average (GPA) appears on the transcript. In Figure 2, it appears in Semester 8 as the CGPA: 7.51 (circled in red). The institution assigned letter grades and then set numeric values for those grades, in this case: EX=10, A=9, B=8, C=7, D=6, F=2. On the application, this student would enter "7.51" in the Undergraduate GPA Grade Average field and "10 point" in the Undergraduate GPA Scale field.

Junior/Senior (3rd/4th Year) Grade/Mark Average (GPA). The Figure 2 transcript also has the semester averages calculated-the SGPAs (circled in blue). To determine the Jr/Sr (3rd/4th Year) Average, add the SGPAs for the semesters 5, 6, 7, & 8 (8.29 + 6.92 + 7.26 + 7.13 = 29.6) and divide the total by 4 (29.6 / 4 = 7.4). On the application, this student would enter -7.4" for the Junior/Senior GPA Grade Average field and "10 point" in the Undergraduate GPA Scale field.

SPECIAL CASES
5-YEAR PROGRAM
If your degree required five years of course work for completion, use the total credits from all five years to determine your Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average (GPA). The Junior/Senior Grade/Mark Average (GPA) would be determined using the 4th and 5th years, instead of the 3rd and 4th years.

Figure 3. Sample of a 5-Year Program on a 10-Point Scale

Undergraduate Grade/Mark Average (GPA). The Undergraduate Grade Average already appears on the Figure 3 transcript, after YEAR V, as the Average College Years Grades: 9.46% (circled in red). The applicant would enter "9.46" in the Undergraduate GPA Grade Average field and "10 point" in the Undergraduate GPA Scale field.

Junior/Senior (3rd/4th Year) Grade/Mark Average (GPA). The Figure 3 transcript has yearly averages calculated, instead of semester, which makes it a little easier for the applicant. Because this is a five-year program, the Junior/Senior Average is calculated using the 4th and 5th year averages (circled in blue), by adding the two yearly GPAs (9.92 + 9.55 = 19.47) and dividing the total by 2 (19.47 / 2 = 9.74). On the application, this student would enter -9.74" in the Junior/Senior GPA Grade Average field and "10 point" in the Undergraduate GPA Scale field.
