Award

The Herman E. DeMund Memorial Fellowship awards a $2,000 fellowship to be split between Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 ($1,000 each semester).

Eligibility

The 2009-2010 competition will be open only to students from the College of Teacher Education and Leadership and Mary Lou Fulton Institute and Graduate School of Education. These academic units are invited to nominate one student for a $2,000 Herman E. DeMund Memorial Fellowship. The recipient will be chosen from the pool of nominees. Awardee must maintain a minimum of six graduate-level credit hours.

Nominees must be regularly admitted to a graduate degree program to be eligible. International students must have been enrolled at ASU or at another U.S. university for one academic year immediately prior to the award period to be eligible. Complete applications that meet all eligibility requirements will be assessed in terms of the following criteria:

  • Academic accomplishments including, but not limited to GPA, test scores, publications, exhibitions, presentations;
  • Contribution to the discipline including clarity and importance of the applicant's research questions or creative endeavors, as demonstrated in the letter of nomination and vita;
  • Progress towards the degree, with typical time-to-degree in the academic program clarified in the letter of nomination; and
  • Contributions to the academic community (e.g., teaching awards or other recommendations, substantial service activities).

A complete nomination packet includes the following:

  • Nomination form
  • Detailed letter of nomination
  • Copies of unofficial transcripts
Deferral Policy- Failure to use this award during the specified period will result in its loss. Under very unusual circumstances (e.g., a documented medical situation; documented U.S. military service in the event of a crisis or when the draft is in effect) a one-year deferral may be granted.
