Prospective Graduate Students
Prior to admission, there are methods and programs to assist prospective students through the admissions process:
  1. Project 1000
This program permits students from underrepresented groups to be considered for admission and financial aid at a number of graduate institutions by completing one application packet.
  2. Western Name Exchange (WNE)
This consortium of 25 universities located in the western and southwestern U.S. annually collects and exchanges names of talented under-represented ethnic minority students in their junior/senior year of their undergraduate education. The purpose of the Exchange is to ensure that participating universities continue to identify a pool of qualified students who could be recruited to the graduate programs at these "name exchanging" institutions.
  3. National Name Exchange
This consortium of 28 nationally known universities annually collects and exchanges the names of their talented but underrepresented ethnic minority students who are in their junior or senior year of their undergraduate education. The purpose of the Exchange is to ensure that participating universities continue to identify a pool of qualified students who could be recruited to the graduate programs at these institutions.
  4. SHADES
Shades, a Multicultural Mentoring Program for ASU undergraduate science students and first year graduate students. The Shades mentoring program invites students in all STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to participate.
  5. California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education
The California Forum, developed in 1990 by graduate deans and staff from the University of California and California State University systems, seeks to recruit future faculty as diverse as the student populations they serve. The Forum is designed to attract undergraduate and master's-level students from underrepresented and highly-qualified groups into doctoral programs in a wide range of disciplines. ASU is one of many universities reaching out to the students in California.
