I-20/DS-2019 Issuance

For detailed information about I-20/DS-2019 issuance please visit graduate.asu.edu/admissions/intl.html

The United States government has strict regulations on the issuance of I-20s and Ds-2019 documents to international students who wish to attend an educational institution in the US. The dates are listed at graduate.asu.edu/issuancei20.html.

Financial Guarantee for International Applicants

Applicants who will attend the university while holding an F-1 or J-1 visa must meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) in addition to the requirements of the Graduate College and the degree program.

The CIS requires that a student entering the U.S. on a student visa has adequate resources available to cover expenses during the proposed period of study. Therefore, ASU must determine an applicant's financial eligibility.

The completed Financial Guarantee form and proof of available funds must be submitted before ASU can issue an I-20/DS-2019.

A breakdown of the minimum funds required for one academic year (Aug. - May) of study at ASU can be found on the Financial Guarantee form. Teaching or research assistant stipends may not provide sufficient funds for one year of study. Therefore, proof of additional funds will be required.

ASU Student Health Insurance Requirement

Degree-seeking international students and exchange students with F-1 or J-1 nonimmigrant status are required to purchase ASU health insurance that includes repatriation/medical evacuation coverage in order to have adequate insurance coverage against illness and accident before being permitted to complete the registration process. In limited circumstances, students may qualify for an insurance waiver. See www.asu.edu/aad/manuals/usi/usi106-04.html for more details. ASU Student Health Insurance information is available at www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/health/insurance.

Employment of International Students

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations prohibit employment of F-1 visa holders off campus and prohibit any employment of F-1 visa holder dependents. Check with the International Student Office (ISO) for guidelines on the number of hours you may work if holding an F-1 visa.
