Welcome to the Graduate College' academic program development webpage! Here you will find resources and information related to the process of academic development.

What is "academic program development"? Academic program development includes the processes associated with the development, review, and approval of new academic programs, changes to existing programs, as well as changes to policies and procedures affecting graduate programs. Most of the rules governing academic program development arise from the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR), the ASU Academic Senate or the Graduate College.

Why is academic program development important? Academic program development is a critical component of the self-governance of ASU, as well as the academic relationship ASU maintains with the state legislature, ABOR, other in-state public universities, as well as various accrediting organizations. Additionally, academic program development is a vital part of the strategic management and quality control of academic programs, providing the opportunity for academic units to evaluate the direction of their academic programs. Clarity of the program's mission, curriculum, policies, and procedures is important, since it not only helps the faculty to plan for the implementation of their programs, but also helps the students understand the program intent and requirements for completion of their program of study.

Where do I begin? If your unit is considering proposing a new academic program, making changes to existing programs, or would like consultation on effective academic strategy, you are encouraged to contact the Graduate College.
