Purpose

Graduate College Completion Fellowships are intended to reward academic excellence and to aid completion of the doctoral or MFA degree. Nominations should be made on the basis of demonstrated ability to complete research/projects of high quality and the assurance that a semester of full-time effort will allow the student to complete his/her dissertation/project.

The Graduate College will award to graduate students in academic departments in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and education who will be completing PhD and MFA degrees in Spring 2010.

Award

The award will carry a one-semester stipend of $9,500. It will not include tuition and health insurance, it is expected that recipients will have completed all course work for their degree and will only need to register for *1 credit hour.

*In general, international students may request exemption to the full-course of study before the semester that they are not full-time. The ISSO reviews their record and gives their approval/follow-up advisement if needed.

Exemption to the full-course- of-study in a given semester is given for the following academic reasons with International Student Office (ISO) and/or Academic Advisor approval only: last semester, dissertation/research or thesis hours,...

Eligibility

  • Students must be officially advanced to candidacy at the time of nomination.
  • Recipients holding these awards will not be allowed to hold a research or teaching appointment, or any kind of employment during the spring semester.
  • MFA students needing to register for more than one credit hour must justify this at the time of application.

Department Nomination Process

Nominations must be submitted through and ranked by the academic unit. To support each nomination, please submit the following electronically to psaldivar@asu.edu:

  • A completed nomination formMS Word Document (If submiting more than one, nominations must be ranked.)
  • Copy of Graduation Office doctoral candidacy letter (nomination will not be considered without it)
  • A letter from the PhD/MFA advisor describing the substance of the dissertation/practical project and why it is significant, documenting that the student has advanced to candidacy, and indicating that the student can complete the dissertation by May 2010.
  • The PhD/MFA student's detailed outline of the dissertation/project.
  • A time-line for completion of the dissertation.
  • A one-page summary of the dissertation/project in nontechnical language.
  • A copy of the latest chapter completed or other substantive work as evidence of progress on the dissertation.
