The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at 2:30
p.m. in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College Associate
Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
Allison; Graduate College Deans Dickson, Lindquist, and Webber;
Professors Barrett, Brooks, Demaine, Diaz, Koonce, McCarthy, Savenye,
and Zhou; and student member Meegan.
Excused: Professors Christopher and Thompson
Dean Ozel introduced Denise Campbell, Program Coordinator Senior in
the Graduate College Academic Programs section who will attend Graduate
Council meetings to take the minutes and provide support in the
graduate curriculum development area. Dean Ozel also provided a summary
of proposals tentatively scheduled to go through the approval process
this semester. These include: six Master's degree planning or
implementation proposals; five PhD planning or implementation
proposals; two Master's in Passing proposals and one concentration
proposal.
Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Maria T. Allison thanked the
members of the council for their service and contributions in support
of graduate education at Arizona State University. Dean Allison
discussed the large volume of new graduate program proposals,
accelerated graduate degree programs, block grants, and expanded cohort
programs.
The minutes for the November 29, 2005 meeting were approved.
Three proposals were addressed as consent agenda items including
renaming the PhD in Exercise Science to the PhD in Kinesiology, and
establishing joint BSE/ MS and BSE/MSE degrees in the Department of
Industrial Engineering. These proposals were accepted and recommended
for approval.
Professor Diaz and Dean Webber introduced the proposal to establish a
Master of Public Policy (MPP) in the School of Public Affairs.
Associate Professor Heather Campbell and Mr. Christopher Hiryak from
the School of Public Affairs were present to respond to questions
including, admission and program requirements, clarification of the
culminating experience, and projections for student enrollment. The
proposal was recommended for approval pending minor revisions.
Professor Zhou and Dean Lindquist introduced the proposal to
establish a M.S. in Astrophysics and Professor Zhou along with Dean
Dickson introduced the proposal to establish a Ph.D. in Astrophysics in
the proposed new School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) within
the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Professor Sumner Starrfield
from the Department of Physics and Astronomy along with Dr. Anna Rosa
Lampis from the Department of Geological Sciences were present to
respond to questions including the projected numbers of degrees awarded
for both the master's and doctoral programs and a clarification of the
learning outcomes for the Ph.D. program proposal. The proposals to
establish the M.S. and Ph.D. in Astrophysics were recommended for
approval pending minor revisions.
