The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at 2:30
p.m. in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College (GC)
Associate Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were University Vice Provost and Dean of
Graduate Studies Allison; Graduate College Deans Dickson, Lindquist and
Webber; Professors Barrett, Diaz, Koonce, Newman, Savenye, Thompson and
Tsui; and student member Aubin.
The minutes for the January 30, 2007 meeting received approval.
Dean Ozel explained to Council members that the policies
discussed and approved at the January 30, 2007 meeting to establish
maximum time limits for students pursuing doctoral degree programs at
ASU were forwarded to the West and Polytechnic campuses for review at
their respective Council meetings. She shared that final discussions
and approvals should be finalized soon and when approved would start
with all incoming new doctoral students.
Group A and Group B reviewed six proposals (three per group) for the February 27, 2007 Graduate Council meeting.
Group A reviewed the proposal to establish a graduate certificate in
Educational Technology in the Division of Psychology in Education
within the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education. Prior to the meeting,
questions received from members of Group A regarding this proposal were
forwarded to the unit, and the responses of the unit were incorporated
into the proposal. There were no additional questions from the Council
members regarding this proposal. The proposal to establish a graduate
certificate in Educational Technology received recommendation for
approval.
Group A also reviewed the proposal to establish a graduate
certificate in Technology Integration in the Classroom in the Division
of Psychology in Education within the Mary Lou Fulton College of
Education. Prior to the meeting, questions received from members of
Group A regarding this proposal were forwarded to the unit, and the
responses of the unit were incorporated into the proposal. There were
additional questions from the Council members regarding additional
clarification of data probes, and hardware trouble shooting, along with
the request to rename this certificate to Technology for Teaching and Learning.
The proposal to establish a graduate certificate in Technology
Integration in the Classroom received recommendation for approval
pending a name change to Technology for Teaching and Learning.
Group A also reviewed the proposal to establish a Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) degree in Nursing and Healthcare Innovation in the College of
Nursing and Healthcare Innovation. Prior to the meeting, questions
received from members of Group A regarding this proposal were forwarded
to the unit, and the responses of the unit were incorporated into the
proposal. There were no additional questions from the Council members
regarding this proposal. The proposal to establish a Doctor of
Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Nursing and Healthcare Innovation received
recommendation for approval.
Group B reviewed the proposal to establish a graduate certificate in
Health Sector Management in the Executive Education Program and the
School of Health Management and Policy within the W.P. Carey School of
Business. Prior to the meeting, questions received from members of
Group B regarding this proposal were forwarded to the unit, and the
responses of the unit were incorporated into the proposal. There were
no additional questions from the Council members regarding this
proposal. The proposal to establish a graduate certificate in Health
Sector Management received recommendation for approval pending minor
revisions regarding the inclusion of a one credit hour applied project
course.
Group B also reviewed the revised proposal (originally an
agenda item at the January 30, 2007 Graduate Council meeting) to
establish a graduate certificate in Integrative Health (proposal
revised 2/14/07) in the School of Social Work within the College of
Public Programs. Prior to the meeting, questions received from members
of Group B regarding this proposal were forwarded to the unit, and the
responses of the unit were incorporated into the proposal. There were
additional questions from the Council members regarding clarification
concerning the structure of classes, including the instructors of
record and clarification concerning community presenters, along with
the request to rename this certificate to Assessment of Integrative Health Modalities.
The proposal to establish a graduate certificate in Integrative Health
was tabled pending a recommendation of approval through electronic
follow-up from the academic unit contingent on the requested name
change to Assessment of Integrative Health Modalities and clarification in the proposal that the certificate is knowledge based as opposed to practitioner based.
Group B also reviewed the proposal to establish a Doctor of
Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in the College of Nursing and Healthcare
Innovation. Prior to the meeting, questions received from members of
Group B regarding this proposal were forwarded to the unit, and the
responses of the unit were incorporated into the proposal. There were
additional questions from the Council members regarding the proposed
minimum total credit hours of 75 that are not in compliance with the
minimum University doctoral degree requirements of 84 credit hours and
adding the student and faculty Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) numbers for
the academic unit in the proposal. The proposal to establish a Doctor
of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in the College of Nursing and
Healthcare Innovation received recommendation for approval pending the
proposal meeting the 84 University doctoral degree requirements and
adding the academic unit student and faculty FTE's in the proposal.
