The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at 2:30 p.m.
in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College Associate Dean
Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Graduate College Deans Dickson, Lindquist,
and Webber; Professors Barrett, Brooks, Christopher, Diaz, Koonce,
Savenye; and student member Meegan.
Excused: Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, Maria T. Allison, Professors Demaine, McCarthy, Thompson and Zhou.
Dean Ozel spoke about the large number of proposals submitted by
academic units and briefly discussed the new process of assigning
proposals in groups to Council members implemented this month to assist
with reviewing proposals in a more streamlined manner.
The minutes for the February 28, 2006 meeting were approved.
The proposal to establish a Master of Nonprofit Studies in the
School of Community Resources and Development within the College of
Public Programs was addressed as a consent agenda item and was
recommended for approval.
Group A members consisting of Professors Barrett, Brooks and
Christopher along with Dean Webber reviewed the request for
implementation of a M.S. in Biomedical Informatics. Professor Ben Huey
from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was present to
respond to questions including, admissions, clinical track and
analytical track comparisons, assessment and learning outcomes, and
internships and placements. The proposal to establish the M.S. in
Biomedical Informatics was recommended for approval pending minor
revisions.
Group A also reviewed the request for implementation of a M.S. in
Biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Utilizing the new review system,
questions were prepared and submitted by Group A to the Department
Chair, Robert Blankenship. The unit responded in writing to questions
including formal courses, Biochemistry course 501, elective courses,
and facilities. The proposal to establish the M.S. in Biochemistry was
recommended for approval pending minor revisions.
Group B consisting of Professors Demaine, Diaz, Koonce and McCarthy
along with Dean Lindquist reviewed the request for implementation of a
Master of Real Estate Development in the College of Design in
collaboration with the College of Law, W.P. Carey School of Business
and the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. The unit responded in
writing to questions including oral defenses, faculty lines, entrance
exams, application processes, provisions for individual cohort students
and the program budget. The proposal to establish the Master of Real
Estate Development was recommended for approval pending minor
revisions.
Group B also reviewed the requests for implementation of a M.A., as
well as a M.S. in Sustainability within the School of Sustainability
(school proposal pending). The unit responded in writing to questions
including funding needs, program relevance to other states beyond
Arizona, faculty involvement and discipline specific coursework. The
proposal to establish the M.A., as well as the proposal to establish a
M.S. in Sustainability was recommended for approval pending minor
revisions.
Group C members consisting of student representative Meegan,
Professors Savenye, Thompson and Zhou along with Dean Dickson reviewed
the request for implementation of a Ph.D. in Sustainability within the
School of Sustainability (school proposal pending). The unit responded
in writing to questions including program of study credit hour
requirements, research hour requirements, and 400 level course
restrictions. The proposal to establish the Ph.D. in Sustainability was
recommended for approval pending minor revisions.
Group C also reviewed the proposal to establish an
Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Technology and
Management in the School of Sustainability (school proposal pending) in
collaboration with the W.P. Carey School of Business and the Ira A.
Fulton School of Engineering. The unit responded in writing to
questions including learning outcomes and assessments. The proposal to
establish the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Sustainable
Technology and Management was recommended for approval pending minor
revisions.
