The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at 2:30 p.m.
in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College (GC) Associate
Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
Allison; Graduate College Dean Webber; Professors Barrett, Brooks,
Christopher, Demaine, Diaz, Koonce, McCarthy, Savenye, Zhou; and
student member Meegan.
Excused: Graduate College Deans Dickson and Lindquist; and Professor Thompson.
Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Maria T. Allison
expressed her appreciation and thanked everyone for their service on
the Tempe Graduate Council this year and for their commitment to
graduate education at ASU as she also noted the significant increase in
the number of proposals this semester. Vice Provost Allison shared with
Council members that a Graduate Curricular Initiatives Plan is
currently being prepared for submission to President Crow and to the
University Provost. This plan will outline Strategic Graduate
Initiatives and will include short and long term goals for graduate
education at ASU. Dean Ozel thanked Council members for their hard work
this academic year and spoke to the members about the end-of- year
proposal tally in their council packets.
The minutes for the March 28, 2006 meeting were approved.
Three review groups were established to streamline the proposal
review process. Group C Council members reviewed the proposal to
establish a concentration in Special Education under the Ed.D. degree
in Curriculum and Instruction in the Division of Curriculum and
Instruction. The unit responded in writing to questions including the
Program of Study and advisor approval of coursework. The proposal to
establish the Special Education concentration under the Ed.D. degree in
Curriculum and Instruction was recommended for approval pending minor
revisions.
Group B Council members reviewed the proposal to establish a
concentration in Neonatal Nursing under the M.S. in Nursing degree in
the College of Nursing. The unit responded in writing to questions
including the current Parent-Child concentration curriculum, and
training in age and cross-cultural neonatal issues. The proposal to
establish the concentration in Neonatal Nursing under the M.S. in
Nursing degree was recommended for approval pending minor revisions
that included the incorporation of the items in the written response of
the unit into the proposal.
Group B Council members also reviewed the proposal to establish a
concentration in Nursing Education under the M.S. in Nursing degree in
the College of Nursing. The unit responded in writing to questions
including required credit hours and clarification of the name of the
Nurse Education in Academic Practice and Setting certificate program
that was approved in April of 2005. The proposal to establish the
concentration in Nursing Education under the M.S. in Nursing degree was
recommended for approval pending minor revisions that included the
incorporation of the items in the written response of the unit into the
proposal.
Group A Council members reviewed the proposal for implementation of
a Master of Healthcare Innovation (MHI) degree in the College of
Nursing in collaboration with the School of Health Management and
Policy within the W.P. Carey School of Business. The unit responded in
writing to questions including program justification, hybrid online
format, course sequencing, group projects/collaborations, on-campus
immersion sessions, mechanisms for assessing benchmarks and projected
faculty hiring. The proposal to establish the Master of Healthcare
Innovation degree was recommended for approval pending minor revisions
that included the incorporation of the items in the written response of
the unit into the proposal.
Dean Ozel acknowledged the out-going members of Council for their
service in their advisory capacity to GC and then introduced Vice
Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Allison for closing remarks for
the academic year. Vice Provost Allison presented each of the out-going
members (Ken Brooks, Scott Christopher, Linda Demaine, Marianne McCarthy, Cathryn Meegan, and Lin Zhou)
with a GC polo shirt and once again thanked them for their great
service to the Graduate College and graduate initiatives
university-wide. Dean Ozel and Vice Provost Allison mentioned the need
for a special online summer session of Graduate Council to review
concentration proposals and council members agreed to review proposals
for this special summer session.
