The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at 2:30
p.m. in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College (GC)
Associate Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Graduate College Deans Dickson and Webber;
Professors Barrett, Diaz, Koonce, Newman, Savenye, Thompson, Tsui; and
student member Aubin.
Excused: Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Allison and Graduate College Dean Lindquist.
Dean Ozel welcomed the members to the new academic year and the
2006/2007 Graduate Council session and asked each member to introduce
themselves. She offered apologies on behalf of Vice Provost and Dean of
Graduate Studies Allison and Assistant Dean Lindquist for not being
able to attend the meeting today due to illness. Dean Ozel provided a
summary of the results for the online Graduate Council summer session
meeting, as well as provided an overview of the Graduate Council Binder
items. Next, she discussed the meeting schedule for the upcoming year
and pointed out that the September meeting time has been changed to
accommodate the exit meeting for an Academic Program Review external
site visit and will take place from 1:00-3:00 p.m. as opposed to the
normal time schedule of 2:30-4:30 p.m. Assistant Dean Dickson spoke
about the process of putting degree proposals into operation from the
Graduate Admissions perspective. Dean Ozel finished the introduction
session by outlining a summary of the proposals that are slated to come
before the Graduate Council in the fall semester, along with providing
an explanation and overview of the Arizona Board of Regents planning
and implementation processes.
The minutes for the April 25, 2006 and June 27, 2006 (online) meetings were approved.
Dean Ozel explained that because this was the first Graduate Council
meeting of the academic year and there was only one item on the agenda,
there would be a deviation from the normal process of reviewing
proposals in pre-determined groups. This would allow members to review
and discuss the proposal during the Council meeting rather than
submitting written questions ahead of time. She then introduced the
proposal to establish a concentration in Arts, Media and Engineering
(AME) under the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Educational
Technology in the Division of Psychology in Education within the Mary
Lou Fulton College of Education. There were some questions from the
council members including clarification of the required background in
AME for post-master's students that are admitted to this concentration,
and curricular requirements of the program. The proposal to establish a
concentration in Arts, Media and Engineering (AME) under the Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) degree in Educational Technology received
recommendation for approval pending minor revisions.
Dean Webber provided information concerning Block Grants and
Interdisciplinary programs. Student representative Aubin encouraged
everyone to have their students apply for Graduate and Professional
Student Association (GPSA) research grants. Professor Koonce shared
with the group that the School of Music is in the process of working on
an implementation proposal for a new PhD program. Dean Dickson
addressed the PeopleSoft project (named OASIS) and shared with members
that Graduate Admissions will go live in PeopleSoft on October 23,
2006. Dean Ozel spoke with Graduate Council members about a new
initiative from the President that will focus on how academic units
plan to incorporate sustainability into the scope of their programs.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m.
