The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall, Room 132. Graduate College
Associate Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Graduate College Deans Lindquist and Dickson; Professors Barrett, Brooks, Christopher, Demaine, Diaz,
Koonce, McCarthy, Savenye, Thompson, and Zhou.
Excused: Student member Meegan.
Dean Ozel welcomed returning council members and those beginning their
terms this fall. All made introductions to the group. Vice Provost and
Dean of Graduate Studies Allison was not able to attend the meeting,
but sent her greetings to the members of the Council. Dean Ozel
provided an overview of graduate program development during the summer
as well as expectations for the upcoming Council year.
The minutes for the April 26, 2005 meeting were approved.
Dean Lindquist introduced the proposal for a Master's in Passing option
in the Division of Psychology in Education. Professor Moore, Director
of the Division of Psychology in Education, was present to respond to
questions, including clarifying when the M.A. or M.Ed. would be
awarded, the use of the GRE Advanced Examination in Psychology as a
requirement for continuation in the doctoral program, and that the
requirements for the master's degree to be awarded as a part of the
proposed option will be the same as the existing master's requirements.
The proposal for the Master's in Passing option was recommended for
approval pending minor revision.
Professor Thompson and Dean Lindquist introduced the proposal for a
graduate certificate in Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and
Healthcare in the College of Nursing. Professor Fineout-Overholt from
the College of Nursing was present to respond to questions, including
prospective students who might pursue the proposed certificate, course
delivery mode, accommodations for non-local students pursuing the
proposed certificate online, availability of internships for students
in the proposed program, minimum GPA required for successful completion
of the certificate, likelihood of completion of the certificate in a
one year, need for a sample program of study and timeline in the
proposal, funding and budget projections, tracking non-degree students
admitted to the program, and restricted enrollments in the courses
required for the proposed certificate. The proposal for the graduate
certificate in Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare was
recommended for approval pending minor revision.
Professor McCarthy and Dean Dickson introduced the proposal for a
graduate certificate in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of
Health Sector Management. Mr. Bartle from the School of Health Sector
Management was present to respond to questions, including any option
for retroactive awarding of the certificate, the meaning of "health
research tools" in the proposal, the intended target audience and
demand for the program, the use of transfer credit into the program,
admissions requirements including prerequisite coursework, satisfactory
academic progress requirements, the effective date for the proposed
certificate, and a description of the "Executive Committee". The
proposal concept was endorsed by the Council, however a recommendation
was withheld pending revision to the proposal.
