Council and explained the many changes occurring in the coordination
and administration of graduate education at ASU, including the name
change from the Graduate College to the Graduate College, the formation
of a new Executive Council to advise the Dean, the coordination of
graduate councils on all three campuses, and the changes to the mission
and scope of the Tempe Council.
Dean Ozel welcomed the members of the
Council and discussed changing the meeting time of the Council in order
to accommodate some members' schedules.
The minutes for the May 4, 2004 Council meeting were approved.
Dean Ozel discussed the business of the Council, including highlights
from the previous year and the summer, and issues for the coming year.
Additionally, Dean Allison discussed the changes in the university
approval process that reflect the multi-campus university model.
Professor Savenye introduced a proposal
requesting implementation authorization for the Master of Legal Studies
(MLS) degree in the College of Law. College of Law Associate Dean Noel
Fidel was present to respond to questions, including the need and
market for the program, the advising process for students in the
program, the capstone experience for the program, course offerings
outside of the College of Law that might apply to the proposed MLS
degree, and the potential need for the program to accommodate part-time
professional students. The Council suggested that the program consider
admitting students on both a full-time and part-time basis. The
proposal was recommended for approval.
Dean Ozel introduced a proposal to rename
the Master of Environmental Planning degree to the Master of Urban and
Environmental Planning in the School of Planning. The proposal was
recommended for approval.
