The Tempe Graduate Council met on September 28, 2004, at 2:45 in Wilson Hall, Room 132. Graduate College Associate Dean Filiz Ozel presided.

Also in attendance were Graduate College Deans Zatz and Lindquist; Academic Senate representative Mayer; Professors Barrett, Brooks, Christopher, Koonce, Thompson, Villalobos, Zhou; and student member Hahn.

Excused: Professors Savenye and Chawla.

The minutes for the August 31, 2004 Tempe Council meeting were approved.

Dean Ozel announced that future Tempe Council meetings will begin at 2:45 p.m. in Wilson Hall, Room 132.

Graduate College Technical Support Analyst Coordinator Roger Lurie provided the members of the Council a demonstration of the new online "GPortal" application.

Professor Koonce introduced a proposal requesting implementation authorization for the Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Tribal Policy, Law and Government in the College of Law. College of Law Associate Dean Noel Fidel and Executive Director of the Indian Legal Program Rebecca Tsosie were present to respond to questions, including the nature of the admission process and size of the cohort for students pursuing the thesis track, other programs in the U.S. which offer an LLM degree, accreditation of the program, criteria for grading and educational outcomes for students in the program, and clarifying the minimum hours required for the degree (including clinical hours). The proposal was recommended for approval, contingent on a clarification in the proposal of the educational outcomes for the degree, clarification of the minimum number of hours required, and further information about other LLM programs in the US.

The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
