The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 2:30
p.m. in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College Associate
Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Graduate College Deans Webber and
Lindquist; Professors Barrett, Brooks, Christopher, McCarthy, Savenye,
Thompson, and Zhou; and student member Meegan.
Excused: Graduate College Dean Dickson; Professors Demaine, Diaz, and Koonce.
The minutes for the September 27, 2005 meeting were approved.
Dean Lindquist discussed the nature and role of the Graduate Council
Appeals Board and also indicated that an appeal was pending. She
requested volunteers from the Council to compose the ad-hoc board.
Professor Savenye and Dean Lindquist introduced a proposal for a joint
Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Master of
Science program in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Professor Sen was present from the proposing unit to respond to
questions including projected enrollment, the admissions process for
the program, satisfactory academic progress guidelines, and the process
for "stopping out" of the program and the potential for such students
to resume the program. The proposal was recommended for approval
pending minor revisions.
Professor Barrettt and Dean Weber introduced a proposal for a
graduate certificate in Bioethics, Policy, and Law in the School of
Life Sciences. Professors McGregor, Maienschein, and Laubichler were
present from the proposing unit to respond to questions including
participation of other units in the program, the admission process and
guidelines, and the sharing of hours between the certificate and other
degree programs at ASU. The proposal was recommended for approval
pending minor revisions.
Professors Thompson and Webber introduced proposals for
concentrations in Biology and Society under the M.S. and Ph.D. in
Biology, in the School of Life Sciences. Professors Maienschein,
Laubichler, and McGregor were present from the proposing unit to
respond to questions including the justification and market for the
proposed concentrations, the relationship of the proposed
concentrations to the existing Biology graduate degree program, the
clarification of the curricular requirements for the proposed
concentrations for the MS and the Ph.D. on the sample programs of study
for each of the proposed tracks. The proposal was recommended for
approval pending minor revisions.
