The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, at 2:45 in
Wilson Hall, Room 132. Graduate College Associate Dean Filiz Ozel
presided.
Also in attendance were Vice Provost and
Dean of Graduate Studies Allison; Graduate College Deans Zatz and
Lindquist; Academic Senate representative Mayer; Professors Barrett,
Brooks, Christopher, McCarthy and Zhou.
Excused: Professors Koonce, Thompson, Savenye, Villalobos; student member Hahn.
Dean Ozel provided an overview of the business and activities of the
East Campus Graduate Council, including the request for planning
authority to establish an interdisciplinary PhD in Physical Activity,
Nutrition, and Wellness. The East Campus Graduate Council recommended
this proposal for approval.
Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
Allison discussed the university-wide mission of the Graduate College,
as well as the parallel structures and approval processes on the three
ASU campuses, including a Graduate Council at each campus. Parallel
approval processes with Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee
(CAPC) were also discussed.
The minutes for the September 28, 2004 meeting were approved.
Professor Christopher introduced a proposal for the implementation of a
Master of Music in Music Therapy in the School of Music. School of
Music professor Barbara Crowe was present to respond to questions,
including questions concerning the cognate areas, the graduate clinical
project, the comprehensive examinations, projected enrollment and
degrees granted figures, and available faculty resources. The proposal
was recommended for approval contingent upon clarification of the
nature and purpose of the cognate areas, the qualifications of the
students who are eligible to apply to the program, and the revision of
the projections for the number of degrees granted per year.
Dean Zatz introduced proposals from the
Department of Theatre to establish a new concentration in "Theatre and
Performance of the Americas" under the PhD in Theatre, to rename the
"Scenography" concentration to "Performance Design" under the MFA in
Theatre, and to establish a new concentration in "Directing" under the
MFA in Theatre. Department of Theatre Chair Linda Essig and Department
of Theatre professor Tamara Underiner were present to respond to
questions, including the nature of the research colloquium course for
the Theatre and Performance of the Americas concentration, the
admission requirements for the Theatre and Performance of the Americas
concentration, and the projected enrollment for the Directing
concentration. All of the proposals were recommended for approval.
Dean Ozel and Council member Mayer led a
discussion on the coordination of proposal revision and the campus
approval process between the Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee
(CAPC) and the Tempe Graduate Council.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
