The Tempe Graduate Council met on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at 2:30
p.m. in Administration B building, Room 286. Graduate College (GC)
Associate Dean Filiz Ozel presided.
Also in attendance were Graduate College Deans Dickson and
Webber; Professors Diaz, Newman, Savenye, Thompson, Tsui; and student
member Aubin.
Excused: Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Allison and Graduate College Dean Lindquist and Professors Barrett and Koonce
Dean Ozel welcomed the members and explained that there would be a
change to the order of the agenda items for the Council meeting. She
thanked the Council members for their support in reviewing a recent
item added to the agenda on November 27, 2006 to establish a Child and
Adolescent Mental Health Specialist Graduate Certificate in the College
of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation. Dean Ozel explained that due to
the recent submission of this certificate proposal a representative
from the College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation, Professor Renee
McLeod would attend the meeting today after the other three items on
the agenda not before as the current agenda outlines.
The minutes for the October 24, 2006 meeting were approved.
Two groups (Group A and Group B) were established to review three
proposals following the new process established in the spring of 2006.
Group A reviewed the proposal to establish a Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) in Gender Studies in the Women and Gender Studies program
within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Prior to the meeting,
questions received from members of Group A regarding this proposal were
forwarded to the unit, and the responses of the unit were incorporated
into the proposal. There were additional questions from the council
members including student learning outcomes and clarification of an
omnibus course listed in Appendix A. The proposal to establish a Doctor
of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Gender Studies received recommendation for
approval pending minor revisions.
Group B reviewed the proposal to establish a Graduate Certificate in
Gender Studies in the Women and Gender Studies program within the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Prior to the meeting, questions
received from members of Group B regarding this proposal were forwarded
to the unit, and the responses of the unit were incorporated into the
proposal. There were no additional questions from the council members
and the proposal to establish a Graduate Certificate in Gender Studies
received recommendation for approval.
Group B also reviewed the proposal to establish a Software
Engineering concentration under the Master of Science in Engineering
(M.S.E.) in Engineering Science in the Ira A. Fulton School of
Engineering. Prior to the meeting, questions received from members of
Group B regarding this proposal were forwarded to the unit, and the
responses of the unit were incorporated into the proposal. There were
additional questions from the council members including clarification
of options on the program of study and clarification concerning TOEFL
scores. The proposal to establish a Software Engineering concentration
under the Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) in Engineering
Science degree received recommendation for approval pending minor
revisions.
Dean Ozel introduced the proposal to establish a Child and
Adolescent Mental Health Specialist Graduate Certificate in the
Graduate Education and Advanced Practice Programs in the College of
Nursing and Healthcare Innovation. Professor McLeod was present from
the proposing unit to respond to questions including clarification of
admissions criteria, learning outcomes, student academic progress
standards and shared certificate and degree program hours. The proposal
to establish a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Specialist Graduate
Certificate in the Graduate Education and Advanced Practice Programs
received recommendation for approval pending minor revisions.
