ANNOUNCEMENTS
The additional meeting scheduled for January 19, 2004 for the sole
purpose of reviewing the first proposed doctoral program at ASU at the
West campus has been cancelled due the fact that the external reviewers
will not have had time to complete their process by January 19th.
Therefore, GSAC will review the new program proposal during its
regularly scheduled February meeting.
All the remaining scheduled meetings (December through May) of GSAC will be held in FAB N303C.
DISCUSSION/DECISION ITEMS
After a review of the differences between the current Policies and
Procedures of the Graduate Studies Advisory Council Appeals Board
(GSAB) and the revised policy that the Graduate Council at the Tempe
campus approved in May 2004, a short discussion took place. The members
of GSAC were informed that the directors of graduate programs at the
West campus are currently developing a "Satisfactory Progress Policy"
for their areas, which is a key component of the revised Graduate
Appeals Policy. The proposed Guidelines for Graduate Appeals, amended
to reflect the appropriate titles at the West campus, was unanimously
approved by the members of GSAC and the new graduate appeals policy
will begin with the fall 2005 semester.
During the discussion of the guidelines of the graduate appeals policy
the members of GSAC made a motion and approve to change the name of the
committee to Graduate Council at the West campus. This also falls in
line with the names of the other Graduate Councils at the Tempe and
East campuses.
Dr. Brett opened the discussion of the possibility of using the
Graduate College application process called "g-portal." This process is
web based and the directors of graduate programs would have access to
applicants' files online. All supporting documents for an application
would be sent to and processed through the Graduate College admissions
office at the Tempe campus. The admission review, recommendation, and
final decision process will remain at the West campus. Dr. Brett asked
the directors to think about the pros and cons of using the g-portal
for our application process. A demonstration will be scheduled in the
near future for the directors of graduate programs and their support
staff.
Members of GSAC sought clarity regarding who is eligible to apply for a
Travel Grant at the West campus. The draft of the Graduate Studies at
the West campus Travel Grant was amended to include graduate students
from other ASU campuses who are a graduate research or teaching
assistant at the West campus at the time of application and travel.
Graduate students must also be in good standing at the time of
application and travel. The Travel Grant will begin spring 2005
semester. The Travel Grant policy was approved as amended.
The meeting adjourned at 2:20p.m.
