participatory phase (PFF year two)

In the Participatory Phase (Second Year), students build upon the experience of Exploratory Phase and explore in greater detail many aspects of the faculty position. The Participatory Phase affords students a great deal of freedom to explore the type of institution that interests them the most and develop a plan to ensure they attain the necessary experience in order to be a successful applicant for the type of institution to which they aspire.

seminars

There are three seminars in the fall semester and three in the spring semester. The seminars are from 8:00am-10:00am on selected Fridays. Topics include:

  • Becoming a Member of Your Academic Community and Learning to Network
  • Mock Interviews
  • Video Visit with Faculty from Other Universities
  • The Diverse Role of Teaching in the Academy
  • Academic Career Choices

self-development plan

Students identify an institution to which they aspire and find CVs and job postings from that or similar institutions and develop a plan to bring their CV more in line with those they find. Students then have a faculty mentor review the plan and offer feedback. The end result is a plan that will, if accomplished, put students on track to attain the type of position they desire.

developmental resources toolbox

Students assemble a collection of professional development resources that could be of immediate assistance and/or future consideration. The toolbox will consist of books, websites, journal articles, conference workshops, online courses, etc. and is intended to help students establish good habits for compiling resources.

promotion and tenure project

One of the most important documents for faculty is the Promotion and Tenure packet that is submitted at the beginning of the sixth year (in most cases). This can be a challenging document to compile if proper preparation does not occur beginning the first day as an Assistant Professor. Students create a promotion and tenure packet based on the aspirational institution, self-development plan, and standards of the selected institution. The goal of the assignment is to provide students with an early glimpse at what will be needed to earn tenure and assist in planning a course of action to achieve it.
