Purpose

Each year up to three faculty will be recognized by the Graduate College with an Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award.

Award

Each award recipient will receive $3,000.

Eligibility

In order to qualify for the award, nominees must be an Arizona State University tenure/tenure track faculty and have mentored at least three students who have completed their doctoral or MFA degrees at ASU. This round (2010), the awards will be made to one faculty from each of the following categories:

  • Sciences and Engineering.
  • Humanities and Fine Arts; Education; and Design.
  • Social Sciences, Business, Nursing.

Criteria for Selection

The intent of the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award is to reward excellence in a wide variety of mentoring functions, including:
  • A demonstrated record of graduate teaching excellence.
  • A demonstrated record of chairing doctoral and/or MFA committees with timely completion rates.
  • An established record of mentoring and student professional development as demonstrated by student publication, external grant funding, conference presentations, etc.
  • An ability to attract doctoral students to ASU through active recruitment and academic/scholarly reputation.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity in the mentoring process.

Nomination Process

Graduate students and faculty are invited to nominate faculty for the 2010 Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award. Nominations must be submitted electronically to psaldivar@asu.edu. The nomination and selection process consists of a preliminary and a final selection phase. In the preliminary phase, the selection committee will develop a shortlist based on the nominee's vita and doctoral mentoring documentation. The final phase requests additional information from the finalists and their academic unit.

Preliminary Phase

Nomination are invited from members of the ASU community. The nomination package must include al the following items:

  • A letter supporting the nomination.
  • A current faculty vita documenting teaching, research, and service.
  • Courses/seminars taught over the past five years.
  • A list of Doctoral and/or MFA students mentored including student names, dissertation/thesis titles, research/teaching opportunities provided, time to degree (enrollment/completion), student awards and recognition, and student placement.
Final Selection Phase
The shortlist of finalists will be invited to submit:
  • An essay three (3) pages that integrates the faculty members mentoring philosophy with doctoral/MFA professional development accomplishments with specific examples of success. .In addition, faculty should discuss their efforts to promote diversity in graduate education. Submission implies agreement that the essay can be published or placed on the GC website.
  • Names, current positions, addresses, and e-mail addresses of doctoral/MFA students who have graduated. The Graduate College will contact these individuals for letters of support.
  • A letter of support from the chair/director of the academic home unit.

Awardees will be selected from the pool of finalists. An interview with the selection committee may be requested. Application materials for all finalists will remain active for the next review cycle and will be requested to update materials if again selected as a finalist.
