Through participation in the Participatory Phase (Second Year), students will:
- Understand the types of professional development resources available to faculty and how to learn about these resources on a new campus. Learn ways to ensure personal professional development to assist with the process of earning tenure.
- Understand how the type of institution and reputation of institution can impact and influence career progression, how expectations of faculty differ by institution, and how to prepare now to ensure that the type of job desired is attained and that professional development goals are met.
- Gain insight into how new forms of media are being used in the academy, how they can be used to enhance teaching and learning and create research/scholarship opportunities and how to think critically about using new forms of media within one’s field.
- Understand what it means to be an active member of one’s profession or discipline, how to develop strategies for building and enhancing one’s professionalism, and how to network and establish collegiality in one’s field or discipline.
- Become more well-rounded candidates for academic positions and have a distinct advantage over peers because of the knowledge and experience gained by the candid interaction with university faculty who have excelled and administrators who are directly involved in making the decisions that impact faculty.
The components of the Participatory Phase (Second Year) are:
|
Seminars
There are three seminars in the fall semester and three in the
spring semester. The seminars focus on what future faculty should
consider as they prepare to enter the job market and what they should
be looking for in potential positions and institutions. Click here for a listing of the 2008-2009 Seminar topics.
Interactive Discussion Group Facilitation
Each student is asked to facilitate an Interactive Discussion
Group for the students in the Exploratory Phase (First Year). This
provides students with an opportunity to facilitate a graduate seminar
session. The Interactive Discussion Groups address current issues
affecting faculty or aspiring faculty. Click here to see a list of the 2008-2009 Reading Group topics.

Developmental Resources Toolbox
Students will begin to assemble a collection of professional
development resources that could be of immediate assistance and/or
future consideration. The Toolbox will consist of books, websites,
journal articles, conference workshops, online courses, etc. and is
intended to help students establish good habits of compiling resources. |
Professional Portfolio
The Professional Portfolio will serve as the beginnings of a
Probationary Review/Promotion and Tenure Packet that is required when
going up for promotion and tenure. This assignment will provide
students with the opportunity to learn about what is included in the
Probationary Review/Promotion and Tenure Packet so that students will
know what sort of information and records should be maintained when in
a faculty position.
Capstone Presentation
Students will
provide a visual representation of what they have accomplished through
their experience in the Preparing Future Faculty program and annual
Capstone Fair and Graduation held at the end of the spring semester.
