PFF Participatory Phase

PFF Participatory Phase (Second Year)

Second year PFF students: Capstone Fair 2007

Through participation in the Participatory Phase (Second Year), students will:

  • Understand the types of professional development resources available to faculty and how to learn about these resources on a new campus. Learn ways to ensure personal professional development to assist with the process of earning tenure.
  • Understand how the type of institution and reputation of institution can impact and influence career progression, how expectations of faculty differ by institution, and how to prepare now to ensure that the type of job desired is attained and that professional development goals are met.
  • Gain insight into how new forms of media are being used in academy, how they can be used to enhance teaching and learning and create research/scholarship opportunities and how to think critically about using new forms of media within one’s field.
  • Understand what it means to be an active member of one’s profession or discipline, how to develop strategies for building and enhancing one’s professionalism, and how to network and establish collegiality in one’s field or discipline.
  • Become more well-rounded candidates for academic positions and have a distinct advantage over peers because of the knowledge and experience gained by the candid interaction with university faculty who have excelled and administrators who are directly involved in making the decisions that impact faculty.

The six components of the Participatory Phase (Second Year) are:

Professional Development Plan
At the beginning of the fall semester, students complete a questionnaire that helps them to prepare their Professional Development Plan, which is then used by the student to develop goals for the Participatory Phase (Second Year) to accomplish that plan.  These goals often include seeking to further develop a weak area (i.e., research/scholarship, teaching, or service) on one’s Vitae (CV).  Students maintain an Activity Chart to assist with ensuring progress is made toward completing the goals outlined in the Professional Development Plan.  To assist students with some of the costs of achieving their desired goals, students are eligible for a small travel grant from the Graduate College.  Click here to see the Activity Chart.

Faculty/Mentor Interactions
A significant portion of the Professional Development Plan is completed through interactions with faculty and mentors.  During these interactions, it is expected that students will engage in an investigative dialogue in order to learn more about that individual’s experience.  To ensure a balance of institutional perspective, these interactions must be split between faculty and mentors at ASU and other institutions.  A total of 64 hours of interaction is required, 20 hours from mentors/faculty at ASU and 44 hours from mentors/faculty from other institutions.

Seminars
There are three seminars in the fall semester and three in the spring semester.  The seminars focus on what future faculty should consider as they prepare to enter the job market and what they should be looking for in potential positions and institutions.  Click here for a listing of the 2007-2008 Seminar topics.

Reading Group Facilitation
Each student is asked to facilitate or co-facilitate a Reading Group discussion for the students in the Exploratory Phase (First Year).  This provides students with an opportunity to facilitate a graduate seminar session.  The Reading Groups address current issues affecting faculty or aspiring faculty.  Click here to see a list of the 2007-2008 Reading Group topics.

Annotated Bibliography
Students are asked to compile an Annotated Bibliography on one faculty role within their discipline that they are interested in exploring in greater detail.  Through the completion of this assignment, students will enhance their knowledge in one area of their discipline as it pertains to the roles of faculty (Research/Scholarship, Teaching, or Service).

Professional Portfolio and Capstone Presentation
To integrate the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) experiences, students compile a Professional Portfolio to outline their experience in the Participatory Phase (Second Year).  In addition to the Professional Portfolio, students are given the opportunity to display this portfolio for fellow PFF students, colleagues, faculty, and administrators with the Capstone Presentation at the Capstone Fair.   At the conclusion of the Capstone Fair, the students are honored as PFF Fellows.  Click here for more information about the Capstone Fair/Graduation Reception.
