Your thesis or dissertation’s format must adhere to the Graduate College requirements in the Format Manual. Though the Format Manual is quite specific regarding most areas of your document, there are many sections it does not address. It is in these areas where you will follow your chosen Style Guide. Please note that when the Format Manual and your chosen Style Guide contradict each other, the Format Manual supersedes the Style Guide.

The Graduate College’s Formatting Tool uses the Format Manual formatting guidelines to generate a template into which you insert your document's text. The formatting tool is designed to help students with the basic format requirements such as margins and spacing, and greatly improves the format review process for students.
