2008-2009
DEADLINE
Friday, February 22, 2008
for conferences to be held in 2008-2009.
PURPOSE
The Graduate College, in coordination with the Office of the Provost,
will fund three to four proposals up to $2000. The program is designed
to support:
- Intellectual
Discussion and Exchange. Invite distinguished scholars to interact
with our students and faculty in a small conference format that will
permit ample time for discussion and exchange.
- Recruitment.
Introduce faculty at institutions from which we recruit students
to our doctoral programs. Care should be taken to assure diversity
of institutional type and regional location.
- Placement.
Through the research presentations made by our students, the visiting
faculty will have an opportunity to meet our best graduate students
and to assess their abilities as potential future faculty.
CONTACT
Pat Saldivar, Graduate College, at

ELIGIBILITY
Faculty and/or graduate students are eligible to apply for funding. Preference
will be given to
one-time conferences over
annual events
(alternatively, if it is an annual event, funding is available only once
through this program). Proposals
from units that provide matching funds will be given preference. Individuals
submitting proposals are encouraged to involve more than one unit.
TYPICAL CONFERENCE FORMAT
Typically, the program would invite two or three distinguished professors
from universities and colleges from which we recruit doctoral students
or in which we seek to place our students. These distinguished scholars
would present research papers on a panel with ASU faculty and graduate
students. Other students and faculty from ASU or the nearby universities
and colleges will be present to respond or join the discussions. Other
formats may be proposed but must meet the broad purposes explained above.
The outside speakers will engage students and faculty in discussions and
presentations in luncheon or seminar sessions. Because the funds are limited,
it is recommended that the conference not last longer than a day and a
half, so that lodging costs are kept to a minimum. The topic should be
innovative and specific, rather than generic.
