Social and Academic Mentoring (SAM) Program

PURPOSE
The Graduate College (GC) Social and Academic Mentoring Program (SAM) matches ASU’s prospective, new and continuing students (Mentee) with advanced graduate students (Mentor) to help acclimate the mentee to graduate education at ASU. The mentor is not a tutor. The purpose of the SAM Mentorship is to support academic success and professional development. SAM also supports the development of peer-to-peer mentorship in established ASU student support services and student organization that promote the graduate school agenda.

ELIGIBILITY
SAM Mentor must be:
- Approved to mentor by current Graduate Director as noted on the SAM Application.

- Hired by the Graduate College and able to meet the qualifications of the SAM Mentor position as posted on the Announcement of Vacancy.
SAM Mentee must be:
- A prospective graduate student or a graduate student regularly admitted into a masters/doctoral program or
- An ASU student support service or a student organization that promotes the graduate school agenda.
- Available to be mentored 1-5 hours per week.
- Able to submit a regular SAM Activity Log (weekly or bi-weekly) to the GC.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Prospective SAM participants must complete the SAM Application Form

- The Mentor, Mentee and Graduate Director must approve the SAM Application Form (if the SAM Mentor is appointed to a student support services area or a student organization, the Director of the student support services area or Chair of the student organization may serve as the "mentee" for signature purposes on the SAM Application Form).
- The Mentor, Mentee or Graduate Director must submit the completed SAM Application Form to the GC for review.
- For approved SAM Applications, the GC will complete the Hiring Process report, and follow the “Hiring the Graduate Service Assistant” procedure at graduate.asu.edu/gsa06.html.
TERMS
- Approved SAM Mentors initially will be briefed by the Graduate College on SAM policy and GC Resources
- The mentor or mentee must submit all subsequent Activity Log for pay periods to the GC. This can be done in one of two ways:
- SAM Mentors are paid a regular stipend supported by the Graduate College (Paid 12.5% percent time, 1-5 hours per week, Graduate Service Assistant (GSA) appointment at $175-$525 for Spring 2008)
- Mentor and/or mentee must keep the GC apprised of any interruption in the SAM mentorship and enrollment
- Activity Logs must be submitted regularly or the SAM mentorship and GSA position will be terminated at GC's discretion.
