While it is recommended that students prepare their own work, it may be necessary for a student to contract an outside source for aid in the word processing, editing, or proofreading of their document. Although a student may utilize a service provider, he or she is still responsible for following the guidelines set forth in the Format Manual and the selected style guide. The Format Manual is published by the Graduate College and is available at the main lobby in Wilson Hall at the ASU Tempe campus or online at graduate.asu.edu/formatmanual.html.
Students should use caution when selecting a service provider and thoroughly discuss the type of work they wish to contract. Service providers should give a written estimate of the total costs and all prices should be negotiated before any work is done. The service provider should be familiar with current Format Manual requirements and the most recent version of the selected style guide. As such, another student's thesis or dissertation is not an acceptable style guide. A checklist (ServiceProviderChecklist.doc
) has been prepared that details many of the questions that a student may want to ask a potential service provider before signing a contract for services.
Format advisors from the Graduate College are available to assist students with the standards set forth in the Format Manual, but are unable to provide software advisement. The Format Advising Office can be reached at (480) 965-5996 or gradformat@asu.edu.

You must be knowledgeable of and follow the format requirements prescribed by the Format Manual and your client's chosen style guide. The Graduate College' format advisors work directly with students and do not provide style guide or technical assistance to service providers.
The service provider list is maintained as a convenience for students and is not an advertising service; therefore, the Graduate College reserves the right to edit or delete the service provider list without notice. If you would like to be removed from the list or need to make changes to your information, please email us at gradformat@asu.edu.
