K-12 students in the Kyrene School District are learning from ASU doctoral students the practical applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a changing world. The project goals are to make science and engineering relevant to K-12 students as an investment in future innovation, to increase public engagement with science, and to develop ASU Graduate Research Fellows as citizen scientist-engineers who can effectively communicate their science and engineering knowledge and research to K-12 students, their families and their communities.
In a three-year K-12 education project funded by the Science Foundation of Arizona (SFAz) and supported by ASU LightWorks, ASU doctoral students lead after-school groups of Kyrene Middle School students in hands-on explorations designed to nurture natural curiosity and develop observation and analytical skills through hands-on experience. In Spring 2012 semester, the program has been expanded and will be offered at Akimel A-al Middle School, Altadena Middle School, Aprende Middle School, Centennial Middle School, Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School, and Kyrene Middle School.
As the world becomes increasingly technological, students need a strong foundation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects. There will be immense challenges in such areas as energy, health, environmental protection, and national security. Practical knowledge in these areas will expand a young student’s opportunities in tomorrow’s world.
Kyrene students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will participate. Graduate Research Fellows from Arizon a State University and Kyrene teachers will develop innovative learning modules and lead the groups. Also participating are ASU faculty and the ASU Graduate College. The program is funded by Science Foundation Arizona, and supported by ASU Light Works, the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, and the School of Life Sciences. Graduate Research Fellows are graduate students enrolled in science and engineering degree programs. This semester, the Graduate Partners in Science Education program which attracts graduate students from the School of Life Science have joined the Graduate Research Fellows team.
Each after-school program has a specific meeting schedule and will meet at the school site where the program is offered. Please download the relevant flier for your after school program to review the schedule.
All after-school programs will have a district-wide Parent/Family Orientation and Overview meeting in January 2012 and a Closing Celebration event in April 2012.
