G. Mid-Semester Hires

The student's academic unit must enter appointment information, including name of supervising faculty member, type and FTE appointment, and whether the TA must attend TA Orientation into gPortal (https://sec.was.asu.edu/gcportal/login.jsp). Hiring units outside of the student's academic home should ask the home unit to enter this information if they approve of the hire.

A.

Nonresident Tuition
Consistent with Arizona Board of Regents' policy 4-301, teaching and research assistants/associates with appointments of 25% (i.e., 10 hours per week) or more are considered residents for tuition purposes.

  • Summer Assistantships
Graduate students who are employed as TAs/RAs during the summer session(s) are considered residents for purposes of summer tuition.

B. Resident Tuition
Effective Fall 2004:
  • TAs/RAs with 50% appointments (i.e., 20 hours per week) do not pay tuition during the semester or summer session of their employment.

  • TAs/RAs with 25-49% appointments (i.e., 10-19 hours per week) receive a 50% remission of tuition for the semester (or summer session) of their employment. The Tuition Payment Office will extend the deadline for payment of any remaining tuition. For more information, contact the Tuition Payment Office (480-965-6341).
Tuition remission is a non-taxable fringe benefit to graduate teaching and research assistants/associates and cannot be converted into a cash award. The tuition remmission will be credited to the student's account or reimbursed at a rate consistent with the number of units in which the student is enrolled.

C. Health Insurance
The university pays the premium for individual health insurance for teaching and research assistants/associates who meet the minimum eligibility requirements during the duration of their appointment (coverage periods are August 16-January 15 and January 16-August 15). These are:
  • appointment at 50% time (20 hours per week)

  • registered for a minimum of 6 credit hours in appropriate coursework each semester, as required by federal policy (see Part 1B of this publication for further details).
In order to receive this benefit, students must choose health insurance while registering for classes via ASU Interactive. Choose the "Purchase or Cancel ASU Health Insurance" option and follow the instructions.

For students not meeting minimum eligibility requirements, health insurance is available for purchase to TAs/RAs as it is to all graduate students and must be selected at the time of registration.

Family health insurance may be purchased, but the student is responsible for payment of the premium and all other related expenses for family members. (For further information on student and family health insurance, see www.asu.edu/health/.)

D. Parental Leave
Graduate teaching and research assistants/associates with .50 FTE appointments may receive six weeks of paid leave for purposes of recovering from childbirth. For further information on parental leave, see www.asu.edu/provost/personnel/parentalleave.html.

E. University Bookstore Discount
TAs/RAs receive a 10% discount on books and supplies at the ASU bookstore.

F. Library Privileges
TAs/RAs are entitled to an extended borrowing period of 90 days.

G. Mid-Semester Hires
Teaching and research assistants/associates hired mid-semester may be eligible for pro-rated benefits depending on their hire date (effective June 1, 2004):
  • RAs and TAs hired by the end of the first week of the semester (defined as the end of the first week of classes) receive the full tuition remission of 100% for those employed at .50 FTE and 50% remission for those employed at .25-.49 FTE.
  • RAs and TAs hired in weeks 2-5 receive 2/3 of the tuition remission for which they are eligible given their employment FTE.
  • RAs and TAs hired in weeks 6-10 receive 1/3 of the tuition remission for which they are eligible given their employment FTE.
  • RAs and TAs hired after week 10 do not receive any tuition remission.
  • RAs and TAs hired by the end of the 10th week of the semester are considered residents for tuition purposes.
