How does research translate to the classroom? Here in the Postdoc Office, this is something we have been thinking about.

That’s why ASU recently joined the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) and ASU postdocs are welcome to participate. For those of you who are interested in becoming a faculty member at a higher education institution, CIRTL’s many resources are dedicated to helping researchers become better teachers.

CIRTL helps you become a better teacher

There are several modalities you can choose from, including live virtual lectures, recorded lectures and workshops, and MOOC courses. Some are offered directly by the CIRTL organization, and others by partner universities, including ASU. All are virtual and free to postdocs from member institutions, who can attend the workshops and network with others through CIRTL learning communities on various topics.

CIRTL workshop titles include: “Introduction to Teaching at a Community College,” “Research, Teaching and Mentoring at MSI/HBCUs,” and “Bringing an Inclusive Mindset to your Teaching.” All you need is a CIRTL account to take advantage of these offerings. Check out upcoming CIRTL events.

You can also earn CIRTL certifications at the Associate, Practitioner, or Scholar level. These designations signal to potential academic employers that you value teaching and have taken steps to become a better teacher. We’ll be releasing more details about that in the coming weeks.

42 institutions are members of the CIRTL network, and it is growing. Based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, CIRTL is supported by the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Members include CalTech, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern, Stanford and UCLA, among many others.

Get started today! Check out the offerings and create a CIRTL Network account. Select Arizona State University as your home institution and you’ll have access to all that membership to the CIRTL Network offers.
