How to apply for faculty jobs workshop resources available

For the second straight year, the ASU Postdoctoral Affairs Office hosted a workshop series focused on how to apply for faculty jobs.

The fall workshop series has been popular with over 70% of ASU postdocs who want faculty jobs in higher education. A 2018 survey of ASU postdocs revealed that 59% hope to land an appointment as a tenure-track research faculty at an R-1 university.  Another 11% hope to become teaching faculty in higher education.

The series began with a discussion about “Choosing the Right Academic Career”, led by Dr. Brad Allenby and Dr. Joni Adamson. Dr. Allenby encouraged postdocs to explore a variety of careers, as he shared his path from lawyer to corporate sustainability officer to university faculty.  Dr. Adamson’s path to higher ed was more direct, and she shared her experience transitioning from postdoc to university faculty.

The series continued throughout September featuring topics like “How to write your cover letter”, “How to organize your CV”, and “Writing your Research Statement.”  The series ends on Oct 22 with a panel session of postdocs who have accepted faculty positions and will soon leave ASU for their new appointments.

All of the workshop sessions this year have taken place on Zoom. High-quality recordings of the workshops are posted on the Resources for Postdocs webpage for those who missed a session or want to revisit a series.

Postdocs on the planning committee for this initiative included Shalinee Kavadiya (chair), Tara Nkrumah, Medha Delal, and Devon McAslan.
