Apply for graduation

Apply for graduation and pay your fees by October 1, 2018. Application for Graduation. In order to have your name included in the  commencement program, you must have filed for graduation by this deadline. Apply online for graduation by going to myASU and clicking the "Graduation" tab. Please note that a credit card is required. If you do not apply and pay your fee by October 1, 2018 there are additional late fees. Graduate students can only participate in the University Graduate Commencement ceremony during the semester they are graduating.

If you do not complete all requirements in the semester you intend to graduate, you will need to reapply for graduation the next semester; the application will not be automatically forwarded. 

RSVP for Graduate commencement

The university graduate commencement ceremony is held each May and December in Wells Fargo Arena. RSVP for the University Graduate Commencement ceremony by October 1, 2018. To RSVP, go to myASU and click the "RSVP ceremonies" tab. Note: this link will only appear for students who have filed for graduation. At this ceremony PhD candidates are hooded by their committee chair (hooder) during the rite of investiture. It is at the commencement ceremony that doctoral and master’s students have the opportunity to have their name read aloud and then walk across the stage to shake the hands of President Crow or Provost Searle.

 

All ASU graduation ceremonies require reservations (RSVPs) from graduating students who wish to participate. 

Graduation ceremonies include

  • Graduate Commencement
  • Undergraduate Commencement
  • College convocations
  • Special interest convocations 

An RSVP submitted by deadline:

  • Guarantees a seat for the graduate
  • Guarantees seats/tickets for a graduate’s guests
  • Guarantees the graduate receive all benefits and ceremony specific items provided by the ceremony

 

How to RSVP for a ceremony

  1. Apply for graduation and pay graduation fees.
  2. Go to the RSVP Ceremonies link available on your MyASU page.
  3. A link under the Graduation Tab will appear after you have applied to graduate and paid your graduation fees. 
  4. Click on the link to each ceremony you wish to attend.
  5. Complete the RSVP form.
  6. Click the "SUBMIT" button at the bottom of the page after completing the RSVP form.
  7. Failure to properly submit the form will result in your RSVP not being recorded.
  8. Students will receive a confirmation via email after successfully submitting a form for each ceremony.

Deadlines and Late Registration

Deadlines to RSVP are determined by each college or convocation ceremony.

If you are attempting to RSVP after the system has closed you must contact your college or special interest convocation coordinator to request to participate in ceremonies. 

Late RSVPs for University Graduate Commencement should be directed to commence-rsvp@asu.edu . When sending an email please include, your name, daytime phone number, ASU ID number and guest count is required.

Late RSVPs for University Undergraduate Commencement should be directed to the University Ceremonies Office at commence@asu.edu or call (480) 965-3565. If sending an email, your name, daytime phone number, ASU ID number and guest count is required.

 

Applying to Graduate vs RSVP for a ceremony

 

Applying for graduation and RSVPing to attend graduation ceremonies are separate but related issues. Applying and paying your graduation fee ensures that your degree will be processed after coursework is complete and certification of your degree is issued. RSVPing for attendance at ceremonies ensures that seating will be made available for you and your guests for the event(s) you will attend. It also ensures tickets will be reserved for those events that require tickets.

 

Other Graduation Information

Summer Graduates

Graduates completing coursework in August may opt to participate in ceremonies the May prior to course completion or the December following course completion. This applies to undergraduate candidates and most master degree candidates.

Graduation and the differences between Commencement and Convocation

Graduate commencement is the university ceremony where President Crow confers degrees upon all ASU graduate students (master's and doctoral candidates). PhD candidates will receive their diploma cover at this ceremony. *All students, Masters and PhD will have their names called as they cross the stage.  At undergraduate commencement, President Crow will confer degrees upon all ASU undergraduate students (bachelor's candidates). For more information on commencement, please go here.

Convocation is a celebratory ceremony where students are individually recognized by the college for their academic achievement. This is the ceremony where students' names are called as they cross the stage and receive their diploma cover. 

PhD candidates

Please be aware that doctoral candidates must complete all degree requirements in order to participate in the commencement ceremony as outlined in Graduate College  graduation deadlines. Please note: it is your responsibility to notify your chair/hooder if you intend to participate in the commencement ceremony. 

Students can only participate in the University Graduate Commencement ceremony during the semester they are graduating.  

Professional doctoral candidates (e.g. AUD, EDD, DBH, DNP, JD)

If you are a professional doctoral candidate and plan on attending the university commencement ceremony, please RSVP online with Marching Orders via MyASU no later than October 1, 2018. Once your RSVP has been submitted, you will receive an auto-response email with further information and instructions, please look for this in your ASU email account to confirm your RSVP was properly submitted.

Master’s candidates

Students can only participate in the University Graduate Commencement ceremony during the semester they are graduating. If you are a master's candidate and plan on attending the university commencement ceremony, please RSVP online with Marching Orders via MyASU no later than October 1, 2018. Once your RSVP has been submitted, you will receive an auto-response email with further information and instructions, please look for this in your ASU email account to confirm your RSVP was properly submitted.

Summer graduates:

There is no summer commencement ceremony for summer graduates. Summer 2018 Master’s and PhD Candidates who will complete degree requirements in August of 2018 should participate in the graduation ceremony in December. Candidates must apply for summer graduation and pay your fees in order to have the RSVP link appear in your My ASU page in mid-October. Your name will appear with the listing of students who completed degree requirement in August 2018 in the December 2018 Commencement program. 

Both doctoral and master’s students who intend to participate in commencement must obtain academic regalia which can be purchased at Herff Jones.

What do I need to do to prepare for graduation?

3.      Order: Order your cap and gown HERE. If you so choose, you can also order graduation announcements, a diploma frame, class ring, and other memorabilia.

What is the difference between graduate commencement, undergraduate commencement and convocation? 

Graduate commencement is the university ceremony where President Crow confers degrees upon all ASU graduate students (master's and doctoral candidates). *All students, Masters and PhD will have their names called as they cross the stage. At undergraduate commencement, President Crow will confer degrees upon all ASU undergraduate students (bachelor's candidates). For more information on commencement, please go here.

How long is the Commencement ceremony? 

The Commencement ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes.

Is there a limit to the number of guests at Commencement? Do guests need tickets for the Commencement ceremony?  

Tickets are not required for the University Graduate Commencement ceremony! You are not limited on the number of guests you can bring.

Can my friends and family watch my ceremony online?

Yes, University Graduate Commencement is going to be webcast live here.

How do I file (or apply) for graduation? What does that mean? 

Filing (or applying) for graduation tells the University that you plan to graduate this semester and have all of the credits and coursework completed to qualify. The Fall Graduation Filing Deadline is October 1, 2018. You must file for graduation online or in the Graduation Office (SSV, 1st floor) by October 1, 2018 in order for your name to appear in the Commencement program. PhD and Master’s candidates must have completed all of the requirements in order to graduate.

How do I request a letter of invitation for my family to attend from another country?

Use this form to request one of the graduation letters listed below. Completed requests can be submitted to any University Registrar Services location. Please call 480-965-3256 if you have questions about your request.

Where do I get my cap and gown? 

Graduates must wear an official ASU cap and gown during the Commencement ceremony. Please order your cap and gown online. . 

What time should I arrive at Wells Fargo Arena? Where do we meet? 

Wells Fargo Arena doors will open one hour prior to the ceremony for both graduates and guests. Graduates should arrive and go to the Arboretum to pick up their reader cards. Graduates will be directed to the West Tunnel and will find their seats.  Graduates need to arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to the ceremony. Late graduates may not be seated with their academic unit. 

Will I get my diploma at Commencement or Convocation? 

Diplomas will be mailed approximately 7-10 weeks after the end of the semester to the permanent address on file with the registrar's office. At Commencement, PhD candidates will receive a diploma cover with a letter from the Dean of the Graduate College.  Master’s candidates will receive a diploma cover at their college convocation.

Diplomas are mailed in sturdy envelopes, but are not framed, so how can I order a custom frame for my diploma?

Will my photo or video be taken during Convocation?  Is there a professional photographer or videographer? 

Professional photographers from Grad Images will take photos of graduates as they process onto stage and as they cross stage and accept their diploma cover. These photos are available for purchase after the ceremony. For more information, visit their website

Will flowers be available for purchase at the ceremony? 

Flowers and floral leis will be available for purchase both before and after the ceremonies from Commencement Flowers.

What if I need special accommodations? 

If you (the graduate, not one of your guests) need special accommodations or have a disability, please indicate what your needs are on the RSVP form and contact commence-rsvp@asu.edu so that someone can assist you further.   

If one of your guests will need special accommodations, please make sure that they arrive early to ensure a seat in a section of the arena reserved for guests with disabilities. Seating in these areas is limited and is filled on a first come, first served basis.

Where should I park? 

Free parking during the ceremony is available in Stadium Parking, Packard Drive South and Lot 59. Lot 58 (east of Wells Fargo Arena) is reserved for disabled parking. Reservations are not necessary. For more information, see this Tempe campus parking map.
