GradConnect Mentoring

One of the most essential elements of a quality graduate education is the opportunity it offers for connection—to a diverse graduate population, to broader communities of practice and resources, and to faculty and postdoctoral scholars. The GradConnect Mentoring Network offers this and more, providing interpersonal support and academic and career-focused guidance needed to successfully integrate interpersonal and academic identities while also navigating career pathways.

Four key ways mentorship affects graduate students

The Graduate College has identified four key ways in which mentorship affects the experiences, perceptions and outcomes of graduate students

  • Mentorship creates durable networks in which students may learn from the experiences, challenges and triumphs of others
  • Mentorship creates durable networks in which students may find role models and support
  • Mentorship fosters connection and affinity to a department, institution, and professional community
  • Mentorship provides encouragement and support, helping students gain confidence and intellectual self-efficacy

Why is mentoring important?

The success of our graduate students depends upon the strength of the connections and relationships they form within our institution. When focused around building academic self-efficacy, professional guidance, and development of support networks, mentorship can dramatically bolster graduate student persistence. Mentorship provides an orientation to the expectations and norms of academia and the professional world, and helps graduate students solidify their developing scholarly identities. The presence (or lack) of motivational resources and support (including faculty mentorship) is a stronger predictor of graduate student persistence than student aptitude and is a key factor positively influencing persistence and degree completion.

Peer mentorship resources

ASU’s scholarly communities are strengthened by diversity and inclusion of a multiplicity of perspectives and ideas. The GradConnect Mentoring Network offers engagement and navigation of academic, cultural and interpersonal identities in meaningful ways that enrich all graduate education and foster pathways between undergraduate and graduate education and professional careers.

Resources for mentoring graduate students

Fostering strong paraprofessional relationships with faculty allows graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to network and prepare for careers. The GradConnect Mentoring Network works to connect graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to academic and career-related mentoring resources across academic colleges.
