Graduate College

On July 3, two associate deans joined the Graduate College. Tamara Underiner is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and Brian Smith is the Associate Dean of Graduate Initiatives

Tamara Underiner, a scholar of theatre and performance studies, joins the Graduate College at Arizona State University as associate dean of academic affairs. Previously Underiner served as associate dean for research for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

Underiner is the point of contact for graduate academic affairs that include a range of activities such as academic integrity, program quality, and the University Graduate Council. She will also advance support for postdoctoral scholars in ways that foster a culturally and intellectually diverse environment.

Brian H. Smith, a behavioral neuroscience researcher and professor at the School of Life Sciences, has been named associate dean of graduate initiatives. In his new position, Smith will lead international initiatives at the Graduate College to enhance ASU’s global presence. In addition, he will work with Units to advance strategic program development. Smith will continue his research at SoLS, spending 50% of his time at Graduate College.

We are thrilled to have recruited these distinguished scholars and seasoned administrators to the Graduate College. Both bring interdisciplinary and innovative perspectives which will be central to their work as we continue to advance graduate education within ASU and abroad.

Please join me in welcoming them.
