NSF-GRFP (National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program) fellowships are awarded for graduate research study in traditional STEM fields, as well as behavioral and social sciences, history of science, philosophy of science and STEM education and learning.  

The NSF-GRFP application and eligibility requirements can seem complex. The necessary essays require strategic planning and multiple re-writes. Successful applicants will often take several months to prepare their applications. This early information session will provide applicants for the 2020 application cycle (Oct. 2019 deadline/s) with all of the information needed to begin their applications early and gain an important competitive advantage.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident

  • Intend to enroll or be enrolled full-time in a research-based graduate degree program in an eligible field of study in STEM or STEM education

  • Have never previously accepted a GRFP award

  • If previously offered a GRFP award, have declined by the deadline

  • Have never previously applied to GRFP while enrolled in a graduate degree program

  • Have never earned a doctoral degree

  • Have never earned a master's, professional, or bachelor's-master's degree in any field, unless returning to graduate study after an interruption of at least two (2) years

Positive factors for selection: Demonstrated potential to be high achieving scientist and/or engineer

Award amount/s: Fellows receive three-years of funding within a five-year fellowship period in the form of an annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees. In addition to these benefits, the Graduate College administers the NSF-GRFP for ASU awardees and provides additional tuition and fees support, health insurance and a $750 allowance per on-tenure year to further support research.
