The Versatile PhD

The Versatile PhD is a web-based resource for members of the graduate community at Arizona State University who are interested in exploring non-academic career options. It is open to ASU faculty, staff, and graduate student alumni who are within one year of finishing their degrees. The Versatile PhD consists of a supportive online community that is free as well as a premium content area. The Graduate Education office has purchased a subscription to the premium content area to provide access to both.

Premium content

The Versatile PhD provides uniquely valuable content, written by real-life “Versatile PhDs” succeeding outside the academy. The high-quality premium content includes:

  1. Career Autobiographies. First-person narratives in which advanced Versatile PhDs tell their professional stories, with all the twists, turns and surprises that shaped their careers.
  2. Hiring Success Stories. Authentic application materials used by real humanities or social science PhD’s or ABD’s getting their first non-academic jobs.
  3. Archived Panel Discussions. Seven times a year, Panel Discussions are held on the site, featuring 4-6 PhDs and ABDs all working in the same nonacademic field, describing how they got in and answering questions. Careers already covered include Federal Government, Freelance Writing and Editing, Higher Education Administration, Higher Education Consulting, and Policy Analysis.
