Dr. David Shiffman Talks Sharks for Graduate College ASU Open Door Event
ASU Open Door, an annual university-wide event, invites the local community, adults and children of all ages, to experience the colleges, departments and organizations of ASU. This year, the event will be hosted virtually and begins on Monday, March 1, and will be available year-round!
The Graduate College’s virtual booth features an interview with Dr. David Shiffman, research scientist with the Marine Stewardship Council and a postdoctoral scholar at ASU. Dr. Shiffman specializes in the study of sharks and discusses the importance of marine-life conservation, common myths about sharks and why he decided to become a scientist. He can be followed on social media @WhySharksMatter.
Included in this year’s virtual booth are instructions for crafting a mobile featuring a variety of shark species designed by Graduate College student worker Danqi Zhang and constructed by graduate assistant Emily Carman. In addition, guests can download the coloring book “What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?” featuring pages with professions that are possible with a graduate degree.
ASU Open Door is a signature event of the Arizona SciTech Festival.

About eighteen months ago, I set out on a journey walking the islands of the Dodecanese during a sailing trip in Türkiye and Greece with several friends. Along the way, I found winding paths, timeless villages and breathtaking views of sea and sky. That experience got me thinking about how adventure shows up in other parts of life, especially in learning.
