EducationUSA: A valuable resource for international data
The United States’ 6th largest service export, in 2017, was education. “International students studying in the United States contributed over $43.1 billion to the U.S. economy in tuition and living expenses during the 2017 calendar year, for a trade surplus of $35.2 billion.” (“Export.gov,” n.d.) While the annual economic benefits of welcoming international students to U.S. campuses are impressive, the knowledge-sharing, research collaborations, and societal benefits to ASU campuses have been immeasurable.
Attracting the best scholars, researchers and students to ASU from around the world requires strategic resource dedication and planning which can be daunting for an academic unit, no matter what approach is taken: opening channels through institutional partnerships, making individual connections at recruitment fairs, procuring funding incentives, marketing campaigns, or other means. It is vital for leaders seeking to increase global engagement in their academic programs to have access to relevant, current data and facts about national and regional economies, education interests, and mobility trends around the world, to help inform their strategies.
Seasoned international education professionals throughout the U.S. consider EducationUSA a key resource for staying abreast of these issues. EducationUSA is a robust network of student advising centers, in more than 175 countries, which operates under the U.S. Department of State. The EducationUSA network promotes U.S. higher education by providing information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States. It also provides information and services to U.S. universities and colleges, to help leaders meet campus internationalization and recruitment goals. ("EducationUSA," n.d.)
