Events Commemorating ASU’s Women’s HERstory Month
Nationally, March has been heralded as Women’s History Month since 1987 thanks to the pioneering efforts of the National Women’s History Project - now called the National Women’s History Alliance. At ASU, the community has created Women's HERstory Month, commemorating women’s history with in-person and virtual events ranging from watch parties to learning about womanism.
HERstory month is dedicated to increasing the visibility of all women in the ASU community. Join us during the month of March as we bring together clubs, organizations and community members to not only celebrate women but highlight the issues impacting women on campus and beyond. The panel, led by Latasha Causey, will feature panelists Joya Kizer (CASA Unlimited Enterprises Inc.), Crystal Patriarche (SparkPoint Studio) and Lisa VanBockern (Skin Script Skin Care). Not only are these women all proud alums, they are also all Sun Devil 100 honorees, marking them as owners or leaders of the fastest-growing Sun Devil-led businesses across the country! Join us for a talk, photo slideshow, and Q&A with award-winning historian Jacqueline Jones, who will talk about the life and times of Lucy Parsons. Parsons, a radical anarcho-communist labor rights organizer who helped to found the "Wobblies" (International Workers of the World) and ignited a movement to rally the poor and middle-class to fight against the rich, is an essential and much-understudied figure of radical left history of the late 19th and early 20th century. She famously said, "Never be deceived that the rich will allow you to vote away their wealth." Gates will discuss her book, "The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World" in an online event. The conversation with Gates will be facilitated by ASU's Aviva Dove-Viebahn, assistant professor of film and media studies in the Department of English and a contributing editor at Ms. Magazine. Hosted by ASU's Department of English and Center for the Study of Race and Democracy in partnership with Macmillan Publishers. On May 9, 2019, the Arizona legislature passed HB2570, creating a Study Committee on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG), which would spend the next year gathering data, reviewing policies, and producing recommendations to take the first steps of bringing this crisis to an end. In this panel, study committee members Representative Jennifer Jermaine, Debbie Nez Manuel, and April Ignacio will share updates and progress from their work with the HB2570 committee over the last year: defining the extent and scope of the crisis; situating MMIWG within centuries of genocide, violence, and colonial erasure; and outlining what's next.
