First-ever Grad Welcome event co-hosted by GPSA

On August 21, GPSA volunteers and New Student Programs hosted the first-ever Grad Welcome event. At Grad Welcome, new and returning graduate students received information about available campus resources along with food and delightful performances by graduate performance groups Swarajathi/Spicmacay, Priority Male and Andaaz.

At tables filled with information for students T-shirts and other fun items, GPSA volunteers, assembly members and executives joined many other graduate student organizations and ASU student service units to provide students tips on how to enrich their graduate school experience at ASU.

Students listened to Education Outreach and Student Services Deputy Vice President Dr. Joanne Vogel, Graduate College Associate Dean Dr. Tamara Underiner and GPSA Assembly President Leah Jones talk about the importance of the ASU family, using their graduate degree to make an impact on the world and how to reach out about any issues they encounter along the graduate journey..

I would like to thank the 600 students who attended Grad Welcome, the GPSA volunteers, Sun Devil Stadium Operations Manager Krista Hansen and her staff and the numerous individuals who worked with GPSA and New Student Programs to help graduate students feel at home in the ASU community and excited for the academic year ahead. It really takes a village to organize such a large event and I’m honored and grateful to have been a part of it!

Graduate education is an adventure

About eighteen months ago, I set out on a journey walking the islands of the Dodecanese during a sailing trip in Türkiye and Greece with several friends. Along the way, I found winding paths, timeless villages and breathtaking views of sea and sky. That experience got me thinking about how adventure shows up in other parts of life, especially in learning.

Finding your flow: Managing the graduate writing process

Graduate writing can feel like a marathon—long, demanding, and full of unexpected detours. But as Tristan Rebe, Program Manager for the Graduate Writing Center, reminded students in the Grad15: Managing the Writing Process webinar, writing is not about perfection—it’s about progress. “The best dissertation is a done dissertation,” Rebe said, quoting Robert Frost: the best way out is through.
