Graduate student support through research participation
Graduate students are often on a strict timeline to recruit participants for their research studies. The quicker a student collects data–whether through a survey, interview, or otherwise–the quicker they can research, write, and graduate! For many, data collection is a stressful aspect of the research process. What would happen if our community prioritized participating in–and advocating for–graduate student research projects?
Now, discovering and participating in studies is easier than ever! Graduate students are recruiting participants on Research Plus Me: ASU’s new study discovery site. Currently, there are 12 active studies run by graduate students. Listed below are a few such studies:
Which Video Streaming Service Will It Be?
Description: A study that explores which features you look for when you subscribe to a video streaming service (e.g. Netflix, Disney+)
Researcher: Sydney Wallace, Graduate Student in Human Systems Engineering
Primary Caregiver Mental Health Stigma and Help-Seeking Intentions in Middle Eastern Emerging Adults
Description: This study will focus on the influence of primary caregiver's stigma on their children's intention to seek mental help. This study will also focus on the impact of peer support in seeking mental help
Researcher: Selin Saka, Graduate Student in Counseling
Description: In this modern era, all of you must be aware of what search engines are (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc). Search engines are great, and help us tremendously in our day-to-day lives. As technology has evolved, they've gotten smarter and smarter, anticipating our needs and serving us content they believe is suited to our profiles. We're working on a project to evaluate search engines on these criteria. Please help us out by filling this short 5-minute survey, and we will optionally mail you our results so we can provide you with some answers as well.
Researcher: Swanand Kavitkar, Graduate Student in Computer Science
Description: We are interested in how Spanish-English bilingual parents read bilingual books to their children (aged 3 or 4 years)
Researcher: Marissa Castellana, Graduate Student in Psychology
Online Dating Misrepresentation
Description: If you are between the ages of 18-29, currently online dating, and have had negative experiences while online dating where others did not accurately portray themselves (lying, withholding information, deceitful behavior, dishonesty, exaggerating, catfishing, etc.), you are invited to participate in a 60-minute Zoom interview about your experiences. Participation is voluntary, and all participants will receive a $15 Target gift card.
Researcher: Cassandra Ryder, Graduate Student in Communication
Self-Compasion, Self-Efficacy, and Women in Engineering
Description: This study will take place online through the form of a Qualtrics survey. Once you sign up for the study you will have access to the link for the survey. You will fill out an informed consent form, a number of surveys, and participate in a brief journaling exercise. This study is completely anonymous. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at tkampf1@asu.edu
Researcher: Taylor Kampf, Graduate Student in Human Systems Engineering
Learn Conditional Probability via Watching a Video and Comments Description: I am conducting a research study to understand students' learning outcomes and experiences in the video and comment based learning environment.
Researcher: Mei Mei Li, Graduate Student in Human Systems Engineering
The State of Research Recruitment at ASU
Description: The goal of this survey is to assess how ASU researchers recruit participants.
Researcher: Amber Hedquist, Graduate Student in English
You can make a difference by participating in research. Not only are you supporting individual graduate students, you are supporting new scientific discoveries that will improve our communities (and the world)!
