Staff Spotlight: Han Segura

As the Graduate College grows and expands its efforts to enrich the experiences of graduate students — we are excited to introduce our team members! Our fantastic staff are an integral component of our mission. From completing daily operations to investing in long-term projects and relationships — the ASU community would not be the same without them.

In this feature, we invite you to get to know Han Segura, our Graphic Design Specialist. They lend insight into their artistic and professional background and discuss the upcoming Graduate College Cookbook!

Name: Han Segura

Title: Graphic Design Specialist

Dept: Marketing/Comms

Hello, my name is Han Segura! I’m originally from the Midwest – Nebraska, to be specific. I grew up in Omaha’s suburbia and the vast, open skies are not unlike Arizona’s (I still can’t get over the palm trees and the vegetation here in the desert, though).

Regarding my professional background, I hold two undergraduate degrees—a BA in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design and a BFA in musical theater! I didn’t want to limit myself to one or the other; as an artist, my interests are ever-expanding and I love working on my craft across multiple disciplines.

Previously, I worked as a graphic designer at the University of Nebraska’s Alumni Association and Nebraska Wesleyan University while studying theater. I love working in higher education because of the access to professional development. I love what I do at the Graduate College, working within the Marketing and Communications team with some incredible people. I love the collaboration and the fact that we’re making a difference in the lives of graduate students and are part of something bigger.

This month, I’m working on the Graduate College Staff Recipe Book. It’s a collection of favorite recipes from our staff! This is my first time designing a cookbook, so I began doing research months ago. This book is part of the Graduate College’s initiative to have conversations about food. Earlier this fall, we held our Distinguished Lecture and our keynote speaker, Kristina Wong talked about food banks to open our eyes to the efforts in creating sustainable food systems at ASU and beyond. I hope this book is a valuable resource for grad students or anyone who wants to expand their cooking repertoire. I’m ecstatic to see this project in print and share it digitally (approximately mid-to-late December!)

Outside work, you can find me cosplaying my favorite Marvel character, “Loki,” among many others. On the weekends, I work on costume construction and attend rehearsals for the Arizona Renaissance Festival, where I’ll play the one-and-only William Shakespeare. (No pressure!) I also love cooking a homemade meal, walking the dogs, or watching spooky movies with my spouse, Brynn!
