In this feature, we invite you to get to know Marjani Hawkins, our Marketing Content Specialist and Editor! In this interview, she outlines her role at the Graduate College, her passion for writing and expanding her skillset.

Hello! My name is Marjani Hawkins. I’m the Marketing Content Specialist and Editor for the Graduate College. I have always loved writing and have been proficient at it. I’m from California, but I grew up in Arizona and received my education here! The teacher called my parents in elementary school to tell them I was writing at a middle-school level! In high school, I wrote for the journalism club and knew I wanted to pursue a career in communications when entering college. I attended Northern Arizona University and joined the staff of the local paper as an Opinion Columnist (their first and only freshman hire). A few years later, I relocated back to the valley and completed a degree in Communications at Arizona State University.
Writing and content creation is something I am passionate about and I am confident I would do it regardless of whether I continue writing professionally – which is how I know it’s for me! The cliche is very true: it does not feel like work when you love something enough. I love blogging, creative writing and fine-tuning my craft in my free time. I am a member of a bi-weekly writers group; they are an encouraging group of like-minded women who help each other grow stylistically.
Since joining the Graduate College in October of 2022, I have discovered a new love for editing! It is so fulfilling to perfect copy and stories about any subject matter. In my role, I am responsible for writing for the newsletter, interviewing students for Q&A spotlights and creating long-form storytelling content for ASU News. I am challenging myself to learn the ins and outs of grammar and the ASU voice and I enjoy the process of expanding my knowledge and skill set. In the future, I am excited to expand into writing web content and other similar projects.
