Introducing your new GPSA president and executive team
My name is Michelle Sullivan Govani, and I am honored to serve as the President of the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) for the 2018–19 academic year. GPSA is the student government representing graduate and professional students at ASU.
It’s hard to believe I am now a 5th year PhD candidate in Biology and Society, but I can still vividly recall my first year at ASU. Back then, I joined GPSA in search of a sense of belonging; what I discovered was an inspiring and tireless group of graduate students who are passionate about advocacy and service.
This year, as then, GPSA is your community. I am proud to work and serve alongside a motivated, optimistic executive committee [pictured]. We look forward to supporting your work through research and travel grants, providing a sense of community through events and socials, and advocating for graduate students at ASU. In addition, we are excited to cultivate professional development through new workshops and to continue developing new programming to support diversity and inclusion, as well as holistic wellness, in every graduate program on all ASU campuses.
Finally, I’d like every graduate and professional student to know that GPSA is your voice. When graduate students feel empowered, seen, and heard, we have impact, not only for our own benefit but for the benefit of our broader community as well. Last year, facing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and the elimination of tax credits and tax-free tuition waivers that thousands of ASU graduate students rely on, our united and energized community experienced that positive impact first hand. Graduate students from all ASU campuses joined GPSA leadership to make their voices heard by the leaders of our university, our state, and our country. And we were successful!
GPSA stands ready and eager to advocate for, support, and empower you. And if you have ideas for how we can improve our programming, reach more students, and serve you best, please reach out. Feedback is always welcome.

Good vibes and best wishes for your fall semester!
Sincerely,
Michelle Sullivan Govani

Graduate education is an adventure
About eighteen months ago, I set out on a journey walking the islands of the Dodecanese during a sailing trip in Türkiye and Greece with several friends. Along the way, I found winding paths, timeless villages and breathtaking views of sea and sky. That experience got me thinking about how adventure shows up in other parts of life, especially in learning.
From practice to presentation: How to deliver a winning faculty job talk
Giving a job talk can feel like the most high-stakes presentation of your academic job search. It’s not just a research seminar—it’s your opportunity to demonstrate vision, communication skills, and fit within a department. In a recent Lunch and Learn, faculty members Associate Professor in School of International Letters and Cultures, Anita Huizar-Hernandez, Professor in School of Life Sciences Jeffrey Jensen, and Professor in Department of Physics Patricia Rankin shared concrete strategies to help graduate students and postdocs succeed as future faculty candidates.
Mentoring matters: Mentoring students through impostor syndrome
Graduate education can be an exhilarating journey — but for many students, it also brings moments of self-doubt and uncertainty. In our recent Mentoring Matters panel, “Mentoring Students Through Impostor Syndrome,” Graduate College Senior Associate Dean Dr. Lisa Anderson sat down with Dr. Rebecca Wachs, Associate Professor in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, and Dr.
