Advance your employment opportunities at ASU’s Postdoctoral Career Conference

The 3rd annual ASU Postdoctoral Career Conference is right around the corner! This professional development event, featuring former ASU postdocs  who have successfully moved on to careers in government, entrepreneurship and industry. The conference will be held on March 25 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Register today

The conference will feature three separate panels of former postdocs, with each panel focusing on a different topic related to advancing your career. 

The panelists will compare and contrast their experiences, and talk about the benefits and challenges of working in their type of job.  

The conference will kick-off with an introduction and welcome from Dr. Elizabeth Wentz, Vice Provost and Dean of the ASU Graduate College.   

Panel 1:  Choosing a Career Pathway (1:10 p.m.)

The first panel will focus on choosing the right employment pathway following your postdoctoral career. Panelists will answer the questions like; what do different career paths look like after your postdoc? and what things can postdocs do now to set them up for success in different career paths?

Panelist for this session include Dr. Emily Turner with the Critical Path Institute in Tucson, Dr. Shahrzad Badvipour with the Arizona Dept of Environmental Quality in Phoenix and Dr. Carlos Rubio-Medrano, an Asst. Prof. at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, TX, among others. 

Panel 2:  Getting the Job (2:05 p.m.)

The second panel will discuss the skills, knowledge and experience that are most valuable in different roles. Panelists will also share strategies for highlighting these attributes in job applications. 

The three panelists for this session are Dr. Greg Orf with Abbott Laboratories in Chicago, IL, Dr. Diane Haiber with Intel in Chandler, AZ and Dr. Christina Kwapich, an Asst. Prof. at UMass-Lowell in Lowell, MA.  

Panel 3:  Advancing your Career (3:00 p.m.)

What does career advancement look like in your chosen field? Promotion, annual reviews, job security, etc?  What are the resources available to you for professional development? These are the questions that will be considered in the third panel.

Panelists include Dr. Heather Emady, a former Postdoc at Proctor & Gamble, now an ASU Professor and Dr. Manpuneet Benipal, CEO of Advent Diamond in Scottsdale, and more. 

Postdoctoral Career Fair (4:00 p.m.)

The Postdoctoral Career conference will culminate with a virtual career fair presented by ASU Career Services. The career fair will allow postdocs to meet with representatives from a number of diverse organizations, who are specifically looking for PhDs to fill their positions.  Some of the positions are postdocs, but some are permanent positions. A list of partici[ating companies will be posted in the coming weeks. 

Even though we can’t be together physically, we hope this year’s conference will be educational and rewarding.
