ASU Graduate College announces 2021 Knowledge Mobilization Award Recipients

The recipients of the 2021 Knowledge Mobilization Awards were announced on Friday, April 9 after a full-day showcase of graduate student and postdoctoral research. The awards, sponsored by the Graduate College’s Knowledge Mobilization Initiative, recognize the innovation and ingenuity of ASU scholars working to advance academic knowledge beyond the university through use-inspired, socially impactful research. 

This year’s 18 finalists were chosen from 116 applications from 23 academic units and over 70 programs. Finalists presented their research throughout the day during virtual, round table sessions, culminating in the announcement of the award winners at the end of the day. 

Masters: Research in Progress

• * Winner* Amanda Trakas (The Design School, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts) - KIDSS: Considering Kids in Design of Safe Streets.

• Alli St. John (School of Music, Dance and Theatre, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts) - Consent and Staged Intimacy in High School Theatre Programs.

• Jeff Tabet (School of Justice and Human Rights, New College) - Choose Awareness.

Masters: Completed Research 

• Winner* Cameo Flores for the School of Music, Dance and Theatre, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts: Weaponizing the Mariachi 2015-Today: Mexicanidad and the Trump Administration.

• Akshay Kumar Dileep from the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision System Engineering (CIDSE), Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering: Early Detection of At-Risk Students in a Calculus Course.

• Tareq Al-Ahdal from the College of Health Solutions: The impact of climate change on diarrheal diseases in Jordan in the period between 2004-2018.

Doctoral: Research in Progress

• Marzieh Bitaab from the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision System Engineering (CIDSE), Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering: Detecting Scam Websites at Scale.

• Lauren van Huisstede from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College: Developing a Graduate Student Workshop Series in Data Management Best Practices.

• Stefania Kapsetaki from the Biodesign Center for Biocomputing, Security and Society: Disease in spacetime: 1460 species approaching the T(r)opic of Cancer at the top of the food pyramid.

Postdoctoral: Completed Research 

• * Winner* Shawna Andrea Foo from the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science: Drivers of fish populations in Hawaii Island.

• Emily Springer from the School of Social & Behavioral Sciences, New College: Dumb Numbers: how international development evaluation undermines gender justice.

• Annabelle Atkin from the Sanford School: Understanding Familial Support of Multiracial Youths' Experiences.

Also featured during the event was keynote speaker Dr. Ronald Beghetto from ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and faculty panelists who shared their experiences with Knowledge Mobilization. Panelists included Dr. Gustavo Fischman from Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College; Dr. Flavio Marsiglia and Dr. Laurie Mook from Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions; Vice Provost and Dean Dr. Elizabeth Wentz and Associate Dean Dr. Enrique Vivoni of the Graduate College.
