Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT)

Real-world solutions to complex national and global challenges often cannot be provided by the expertise of a single discipline. Future scientists will need a multidisciplinary understanding of related fields, including the social, economic, ethical and policy implications of their work.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) introduced the IGERT program in 2001 to help universities advance student training for interdisciplinary research. The goal of the IGERT program is to seed interdisciplinary training initiatives that can be transformative for the institution and lead to the development of a diverse, globally-engaged science and engineering workforce.

ASU has a strong culture of interdisciplinary graduate education and is one of only three universities to have been awarded seven or more IGERT awards. In keeping with NSF’s intent, IGERT programs at ASU have catalyzed many academic initiatives in interdisciplinary research and education. Previously funded IGERT’s have led directly to the establishment of innovative PhD programs in Sustainability, Biological Design, and Arts, Media and Engineering. These training programs have also paved the way for the establishment of major interdisciplinary initiatives, such as the Biodesign Institute, the Global Institute of Sustainability, and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering.
