At their October 8 Scholar Dinner, the Phoenix Chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS)  Foundation brought together doctoral students from all three of Arizona’s state institutions who received the 2021-2022 ARCS Award as well as the chapter members and donors who sponsor these outstanding scholar researchers.

The Graduate College has built a summer workshop series to help ASU staff and faculty take advantage of the resources we provide to enable student success. Whether your graduate program needs to update its handbook to be more equitable, inclusive and student-centered, wants to make the most of Graduate College’s student accounts tools or would like to make better use of student information, the Graduate College Summer Workshop Series has got you covered.

The department of psychology is offering two funding opportunities for graduate students. You do not have to be in a psychology program to be eligible!

Changemaker Central @ ASU is currently offering an opportunity for graduate students and student organizations who have an idea to change their community. The ASU Changemaker Community Action Grants allow students to fund projects which impact their community in a specific area of focus, such as service. Available funding opportunities include:

One day, back in graduate school, my advisor asked me to come into her office and share some of my research with a visitor, who was a well-known scholar in my field. I was nervous, but I managed to give him a demo of my work. He asked me questions and we had a nice exchange.

The ASU Graduate College is pleased to announce the creation of the Caregiver Assistance Fellowship intended to support graduate students who are parents or caregivers and who have had additional financial burden due to COVID-19 closures.

This will represent an increase of 23 million graduates above current levels of production. While our mission focuses on both student access and success in higher education, our emphasis is on attainment, defined as completing post-secondary certificates, associate and baccalaureate degrees and credentials.

Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research

The fellowship program provides support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. The dissertation study should focus on an education research topic such as high stakes testing; ethnic studies/curriculum; tracking; STEM development; measurement of achievement and opportunity gaps; English language learners; or bullying and restorative justice.

Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for funding innovative doctoral dissertation research that is relevant to preventing and controlling crime, and ensuring the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States.

The Drs. Rosalee G. and Raymond A. Weiss Research and Program Innovation Grants

Research, education and intervention projects and programs that use psychology to solve social problems in the following priority areas:

• Applying psychology to at-risk, vulnerable populations
• Preventing violence
• Understanding the connection between behavior and health
• Understanding and eliminating stigma and prejudice 

Sponsored by the American Psychological Association, this is a $1,000 grant opportunity. 

NIAID Research Education Program

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Institute of Allergy and infectious Diseases (NIAID) R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs in NIAID mission areas. 

This is a $1,625,000 grant opportunity. 

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Understanding Dynamic and Multi-Scale Systems

Fellowship awards are designed to provide students with opportunities to pursue postdoctoral training and research opportunities aligned with their interest in obtaining additional skills and experience and that might not otherwise be available.

Sponsored by the James S. McDonnell Foundation, this is a $200,000 grant opportunity. 

Education for American Civic Life

The Teagle Foundation seeks to elevate the civic objectives of liberal arts education through faculty-led efforts within the curriculum grounded in the issues that define and challenge American democracy. Successful proposals are expected move beyond mere additions to the course catalog and reflect an approach to integrative learning that serves the student body and can be sustained beyond the life of the grant.

This is a $400,000 grant opportunity. 

Innovation in Graduate Education

IGE focuses on projects aimed at piloting, testing, and validating innovative and potentially transformative approaches to graduate education. IGE projects are intended to generate the knowledge required for their customization, implementation, and broader adoption. The program supports testing of novel models or activities with high potential to enrich and extend the knowledge base on effective graduate education approaches.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, this is a $500,000 grant opportunity. 

Cyberlearning and Future Learning Technologies

The purpose of this program is to fund exploratory and synergistic research in learning technologies to prepare learners to excel in work at the human-technology frontier. This program responds to the pressing societal need to educate and re-educate learners of all ages (students, teachers and workers) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. This program funds learning technology research in STEM and other foundational areas that enable STEM learning.

Collaborative Science Award

To foster innovative collaborative approaches to research projects that propose novel pairings of investigators from at least two broadly disparate disciplines. The proposal must focus on the collaborative relationship, such that the scientific objectives could not be achieved without the efforts of at least two co-principal investigators and their respective disciplines.

Solar, Heliospheric, and Interplanetary Environment (SHINE)

Proposals should be focused in the investigation of the connection between eruptive events and magnetic phenomena on the Sun and the corresponding solar wind structures in the inner heliosphere.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Directorate of Geosciences, Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, this is a $1,200,000 grant opportunity. 

Promoting research on music and health

To increase our understanding of how music affects the brain, body, and behavior. Then to use that knowledge to develop evidence-based music interventions to enhance health or treat specific diseases and disorders. Projects can also investigate how music is processed by or modifies the brain, or how it affects specific biological functions during childhood development and learning, adulthood, and aging. Projects can also include preliminary interventions that provide a basis for therapeutic intervention.

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (GFSD) is seeking graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to apply for its fellowship opportunity. 

GFSD’s goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in STEM fields. GFSD prides itself on having the most diverse applicant pool of any national STEM fellowship program. 

Each Fall, the ASU Graduate College welcomes the Phoenix Chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS)  Foundation to campus to meet with the graduate scholars that their organization generously funds and their faculty mentors.

The Office of Applied Innovation is seeking graduate interns for an immersive training program in which students will be able to advance their own project(s) in a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and mission-driven environment.

Each Fall, Arizona State University welcomes returned Peace Corps volunteers (RPCV) as they continue their service in underserved communities through a partnership with their academic units. Currently, ASU has a total of 18 fellows, including 10 new fellows chosen for the 2020-21 school year. This fall, the Graduate College conducted its first-ever virtual orientation for the new Coverdell Fellows to discuss the expectations during their tenure.

While ASU travel restrictions remain in place, the Graduate College will continue to offer professional development funding for internet-based programs and events which occur between August 1 and September 30, 2020. Awards of up to $500 are available to help cover registration costs for online/remote conferences, workshops, and training related to their degree studies.

What is a distinguished award?

A distinguished award acts as an academic credential — an indicator of future success and mark of exceptional scholarship — that will follow a scholar throughout their academic career. 

In seeking ways to best support ASU graduate students during the current pandemic, the Graduate College is pleased to announce the creation of a new award to help ease some of the unanticipated financial burdens due to COVID-19 as well as some flexibility with our summer travel award funding to continue supporting professional development during ongoing travel restrictions.
