Essential resources for your first week as a graduate student

While the experience of being a graduate student is varied and unique, there are common phenomena that most, if not all, graduate students will encounter after enrolling in a new program. Here are tips to help you acclimate and have a great first week!

Scholar recognizes the importance of time and community when building connections

In this Q&A, we highlight Preparing Future Faculty and Scholars (PFx) program attendee Jamal Brooks-Hawkins, a third-year Gender Studies PhD student specializing in Black, sexual and gender minorities in the African diaspora. In this interview, he discusses spending your time wisely, investing in community and the importance of better public health discourse.

PFx scholar encourages framing Humanities research as a discovery instead of a problem

This month, we highlight Preparing Future Faculty and Scholars (PFx) program attendee, Isobel-Marie Johnston, an educator specializing in Jewish mikvah immersion. In this interview, she discusses rituals, special cultural practices and reframing research queries as discoveries instead of problems.

Etiquette pointers and best practices for graduate students and postdocs

Graduate students and postdocs learned helpful tips from an etiquette coach to be prepared for lunch, dinners and happy hours in a professional setting.

Reimagining the margins

As a collective, we often think of margins as bad things because they imply confinement and rigidity. But what happens when we start to think of them as opportunities? This mindset shift can have major impacts in education, leadership and beyond.

The role music plays in my life

The start of a new semester means welcoming new faces and getting to know you a little better. I was inspired by a recent conversation with graduate students to reflect on the role music plays in my life.

Adapting educational practices to meet students where they are

Graduate students can now align their work with ASU design aspirations

In spring 2021, graduate students in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering were asked to share how their research aligned with ASU’s eight design aspirations in the Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS) as part of a pilot project launched by the Graduate College. The goal was to get a better idea of how graduate student research supports the institutional objectives of excellence, access and impact.

iPOS makes faculty approval and professional development planning easier

In keeping with the spirit of innovation at ASU, the Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS) is an ever-expanding toolbox for graduate students, advising staff, and now, for the first time, faculty.

Supporting graduate student health and well-being

“You're in pretty good shape for the shape you are in.” --Dr. Seuss

Our physical health and our mental health are closely intertwined, so the health of one affects the health of the other. I use exercise to improve my mental health.

Congratulations! We are greater than our challenges

Congratulations to all of you for making it through one of the most difficult academic years in the modern era.

When I was a graduate student, I faced challenges that sometimes felt overwhelming – a member of my committee asked me to write a new section of my dissertation; I declined a TA offer and funded myself for 8 months to complete my degree; I lived alone and grew tired of working alone in my at-home office (little did I know that COVID would come)--but my challenges pale in comparison to those faced by today’s graduate students and postdocs.
